Is it a world record? Club smashes 417-2 off 20 overs

A club side from Gloucestershire is waiting to discover whether they have posted the highest-ever total in T20 cricket after piling up an astonishing 417-2. Dumbleton CC, who compete in the Premier One top tier of the West of England league, smashed this mammoth score against Hatherley and Reddings CC on Tuesday. Opener Ewan Gegg blitzed 206 not out off 55 balls, including 13 fours and 23 sixes, while Dan Holland contributed 122 off 37 deliveries. In total, Dumbleton’s batsmen cleared the boundary 47 times. Predictably, Hatherley and Reddings CC were skittled for 229, 188 runs short, as they were bowled out. Harry Bloomfield, who conceded 35 from his one over during Dumbleton’s innings, finished with a rare all-round performance, hitting 109 off 48 balls to become the third centurion of the match.
“We all said it’s one of the weirdest and most fantastic games we’ve seen,” Gegg told BBC Radio Gloucestershire. “I don’t see it being broken for a long time. It was such an odd game.” Dumbleton are seeking clarification on whether the score counts as an official record in T20 cricket, recalling another high-scoring match in India in 2017 where Maavi finished on 416-2. Last September, England posted 304-2 in a T20 International against South Africa, a record for a match between two Test nations, while the highest total in a professional game stood at 349-5 by Baroda in 2024. Gegg added: “We got a really good start with Tom Kelly [64 off 25 balls], and we kept the momentum going. We had a strong batting order, so we thought we’d keep pushing, and it reached a point where I didn’t think we’d reach 200.” He continued: “As the innings progressed, I thought there might still be a chance if everything clicked, and fortunately it did.”
Asked why the game turned into such a prolific scoring affair, Gegg offered several theories. “We wanted to win to secure a home quarter-final for the next round, and perhaps that played a part, but it felt very random,” he explained. “Our ground is known for being a good pitch, and sometimes it’s a small boundary on one side. The pink ball seemed to travel a bit further and not behave as much, and everyone just got into a rhythm and kept going.”
