Barcelona captain wants to stay at club and win back his place in team after difficult year

The past year has proved to be a trying period for Barcelona’s defender and second captain Ronald Araujo. The Uruguayan international grappled with mental health challenges, found himself dropped from the lineup, and scarcely featured under Hansi Flick across the campaign. The season’s difficulties extended to the international stage as well, with the FIFA World Cup not unfolding as he had hoped. A muscle injury sidelined the Uruguayan defender for all three of his country’s matches, casting doubt over his availability. Although he hoped to be fit in time for a showdown with Spain, he was unable to recover before Uruguay’s elimination.
Now, according to MARCA, despite persistent speculation about his future that lingered throughout the summer, Araujo has never seriously contemplated leaving Barcelona. He returned to Catalonia today after a brief break following Uruguay’s World Cup exit, with his international commitments behind him and his focus fully redirected to Barça. Those close to the situation confirm that the defender remains wholly committed to the club and would only reconsider his plans if Barcelona explicitly signaled that he was no longer part of their long-term project. At present, there is no indication of such a scenario.
Araujo understands that the upcoming season could be one of the most pivotal of his career, given the challenges of the previous year and the impact on his standing within the squad. By season’s end, Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin had emerged as the preferred central defensive pairing, and when either was unavailable, Eric Garcia was often selected ahead of Araujo. Now feeling fully recovered, the center-back believes the coming campaign can be markedly different. His objective is straightforward: to reclaim a permanent place in Barcelona’s starting eleven. He also recognizes that the path back will not be easy.
The competition for the two center-back positions is intense, with Cubarsi, Martin, Eric Garcia, and the recently renewed Andreas Christensen all in the mix for minutes. That leaves five defenders vying for just two starting spots, intensifying the battle for a regular role in the heart of Barça’s defense. For Araujo, pre-season will be crucial. He understands that arriving in peak physical condition will maximize his chances of persuading Flick that he deserves to return to the core of Barcelona’s defence.
The defender is acutely aware of what is at stake. If he cannot re-establish himself in Barcelona, there may come a day when a move elsewhere becomes a consideration. For now, however, his commitment remains unshaken. His priority is to stay at Barcelona, to fight for his place, and to become once again one of the first names on Hansi Flick’s team sheet. The road ahead is demanding, but Araujo’s resolve is clear: he intends to reclaim his status as a starting pillar for both club and country, and to help steer Barcelona back toward their top competitive form.
