What Brent Brennan said at Big 12 Football Media Days

Arizona football is approaching, and the season seems to be underway in spirit as head coach Brent Brennan and a slate of player representatives prepared for Big 12 media days. Brennan was at the center of attention Wednesday in Frisco, Texas, where he spoke about the current state of the program. Here is a summary of his remarks from the podium.
Brennan began by expressing appreciation for Commissioner Yormark and the Big 12 leadership for hosting what he called a first-rate event. He emphasized that his players, staff, and administration are genuinely excited to be in attendance. Before fielding questions, he outlined where Arizona football stands as it enters year three. He reflected on the transition period in year one, describing it as chaotic after a late start and focusing on stabilization—retaining players, building a roster, and laying down a foundation of culture. In year two, he noted, the program made meaningful strides with the arrival and retention of high-profile players and the establishment of a clear culture built around a defining standard he calls the “red line,” which he defines as effort, execution, and accountability.
As the team progressed through that second year, Brennan stressed that everyone inside the program understood precisely what the red line entails and what the expectations were for moving forward. He highlighted that the results followed the process, citing a nine-win season and a strong postseason bowl appearance as evidence that the approach was paying off. Now, heading into year three, he asked how the program evolves beyond that baseline. The red line will remain the standard, but Brennan pointed to additional focal points—commitment, toughness, and momentum—that he believes are driving the program forward.
He argued that the momentum from last season must be capitalized on, and he noted a robust offseason, strong recruiting, and high-level engagement from the administration, donor network, and fan base as indicators that the program is trending upward. That momentum, he said, is reflected in the players who would speak to the media later, giving a clear signal of where the program stands and how it is progressing. Brennan also noted that administrative backing, donor enthusiasm, and fan support have become more pronounced since joining the Big 12, a conference he described as intense and competitive with new opponents and venues. He said that, after two years in the league, the team and its supporters have a clearer sense of what these games feel like and how demanding the conference is, which, in his view, makes the competition even more exciting.
