Washington football reportedly among suitors for five-star 2028 QB

After locking up four-star Blake Roskopf in the 2027 cycle, the Washington Huskies are turning their attention to the 2028 quarterback class and have emerged as potential contenders for one of the nation’s top prospects, five-star Christopher Vargas. The 6-foot-4, 175-pound standout from St. John’s Prep in Danvers, Massachusetts is ranked as the No. 5 overall prospect and the No. 2 quarterback in the country by 247Sports. Vargas appears to be nearing a decision and has placed the Huskies in the mix alongside Ohio State, UCLA, and USC as his leading programs. Yet, the Huskies aren’t considered the clear front-runners by coaches and analysts.
Rivals’ Chad Simmons and Steve Wiltfong have both submitted predictions favoring coach Ryan Day and the Buckeyes, as Washington and head coach Kalen DeBoer’s staff continue their strategy of pursuing larger-pocketed quarterbacks to fit their system in the post-Demond Williams Jr. era. 247Sports’ Andrew Ivins described Vargas as a “lanky pocket passer that wins with ball placement,” noting his clean mechanics that generate impressive torque. Ivins also highlighted Vargas’s ability to fire with a firm base to target throws, his resilience to take a hit, and the need for continued development to become a high-level facilitator. While Vargas possesses the physical tools and mechanics that attract major programs, questions remain about whether Washington’s pitch can rise to the top of his list.
Fisch and his staff have continued to push the Huskies’ reach, aiming to establish a coast-to-coast presence. However, they have yet to reap results in Massachusetts. Washington’s recruitment in the region has had mixed outcomes in recent years. In 2026, the Huskies made a late bid to flip four-star defensive lineman Carter Gooden from UCLA before he ultimately signed with Tennessee. Washington also attempted to insert themselves in the pursuit of Gooden’s teammate at Tabor Academy, 2027 four-star quarterback Peter Bourque, after Bourque briefly backed off a pledge to Penn State and ultimately ended up recommitting to Virginia Tech under coach James Franklin.
As Washington continues its search for a 2028 quarterback, several names remain in the mix. Four-star legacy Titus Huard and three-star in-state prospect AJ Tuivaiave are among the top targets to monitor as the Huskies pursue a signal-caller who can fit their long-term plans. In the national recruiting landscape, Vargas stands out as a major prize, and the Huskies are determined to position themselves as a legitimate option in his considered list, even as they face stiff competition from programs with deeper roots on Vargas’s radar.
