Dayton Dragons: Great Lakes holds off comeback effort, takes series opener

On Tuesday night, Great Lakes starting pitcher Zach Root delivered an impressive performance, fanning 11 and allowing no baserunner past first through six scoreless innings as the Loons defeated the Dayton Dragons 4-2. The early stretch of the game remained scoreless as Dayton’s Ovis Portes navigated trouble in each of the first four frames. The deadlock broke in the bottom of the fifth when Portes issued a leadoff walk, and Logan Wagner followed with a run-scoring double to put Great Lakes on the board at 1-0.
Portes was relieved by Beau Blanchard, who immediately surrendered an RBI double to Emil Morales, extending the Loons’ lead to 2-0. After two walks, Great Lakes tacked on another run via a sacrifice fly, making it a three-run inning. The Dragons found trouble again in the sixth when Blanchard allowed a leadoff home run to Chuck Davalan, swelling the Loons’ advantage to 4-0.
Entering the eighth, Dayton had managed just two hits and had not sent a runner to second base. Alfredo Alcantara sparked the inning with a leadoff double to left-center. With one out, Victor Acosta earned a walk, and Peyton Stovall ripped a triple down the right-field line, his ball wedged beneath the Loons bullpen bench, allowing Alcantara and Acosta to score and trim the deficit to 4-2. However, the rally stalled there, as Ryan McCrystal and Julio Carreras both tapped out before Stovall could come home, leaving the score unchanged.
In the ninth, Dayton searched for a late-inning comeback, placing the tying run on base when John Michael Faile drew a walk with one out. Tyson Lewis then struck out for the second out, and Alcantara lined a single to center to advance Faile to second, but Marcus Smith struck out swinging to end the game. Dayton finished with five hits on the night. Stovall collected two hits, including a triple, and drove in both Dragons’ runs. Alcantara added a double, a single, and a walk, while Faile contributed a single.
Portes, charged with the loss, fought hard but departed after five innings with Dayton trailing 1-0. In four innings of work, he yielded two runs on five hits, walked three, and struck out five. This game opened a six-game series in Midland, beginning an important stretch for both teams as they continue to chase playoff positioning. Root’s strong performance underscored a key pitching duel, as the Loons leveraged timely offense and solid bullpen work to secure the win. The series now shifts into a new phase, with both clubs aiming to gain momentum during the Midland series.
