Manchester United are on the verge of sealing a deal for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos. The Athletic reports that United have reached an agreement with Chelsea to bring the 22-year-old to Old Trafford. The proposed package would see United pay an initial 48 million pounds, with a further 2 million pounds in add-ons, and Chelsea would retain a 10 percent sell-on clause. Santos has already agreed personal terms with United and is now set to undergo a medical to finalize the transfer.
The Brazil international joined Chelsea from Vasco da Gama in 2023 and has since spent time on loan with Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg. He elevated his standing significantly during a standout 2025-26 season with Chelsea, making 43 appearances across all competitions, contributing three goals and four assists. Strengthening the midfield has been a key objective for United this summer, particularly in the wake of Casemiro’s departure as a free agent. The club has already completed a deal for Ederson from Atalanta.
However, the need for midfield reinforcements at Old Trafford remains pressing, especially after Manuel Ugarte sustained a long-term injury while representing Uruguay at the World Cup. United also faced disappointment in attempts to sign Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes due to their high price tags. Nevertheless, Michael Carrick’s side are now poised to secure Santos.
The 22-year-old is regarded as a top-class midfielder, highly rated for his physical presence, progressive passing, and goal-threat capabilities. While his primary role is as a defensive midfielder, he can also operate effectively as a number eight. If the move goes through, Santos would bring a mix of tenacity, distribution, and versatility to United’s midfield lineup. In terms of style and profile, he fits the club’s preference for a midfielder who can contribute both defensively and offensively, helping to bolster a squad that has sought greater balance and options in central areas.
Santos’ arrival would represent a continuation of United’s strategy to add depth and quality in the engine room, following the acquisition of Ederson and the ongoing considerations around other midfield targets. His ability to screen the back line, break lines with his passing, and contribute to goal creation would be welcome attributes as United aim to compete more effectively on multiple fronts in the coming season. If he passes the medical and all formalities are completed, Santos will join United with a reputation built on consistency, physicality, and technical readiness, adding another layer to a midfield that supporters hope will provide greater control and forward momentum.
