“It’s going to be fun” – Marc Guehi previews Erling Haaland and Norway showdown in World Cup quarter-final

Manchester City teammates are poised to meet on the world stage as England prepare to face a buoyant Norway. England defender Marc Guéhi will spearhead the mission to quell his club colleague Erling Haaland, who sits at the heart of the tournament’s Golden Boot chase. In a pre-match chat with the FA’s media channels ahead of Saturday’s clash in Miami, Guéhi described the individual duel as something to look forward to despite the significant physical challenge, calling it “fun” and insisting it will be a real test he and his teammates are ready for.
The upcoming quarter-final between England and Norway will feature a number of Manchester City stars facing off, underscoring the club’s influence across both squads. The tie was confirmed after a dramatic round of 16, which saw Norway reach their first ever World Cup quarter-final with a 2-1 victory over five-time champions Brazil, secured by Haaland’s brace. On the other side, Thomas Tuchel’s England side navigated a tense encounter at the Azteca Stadium, edging Mexico 3-2 after a second-half red card to defender Jarell Quansah.
England’s squad includes several City-connected players, such as Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guéhi, and newly signed midfielder Elliot Anderson, though the task ahead is daunting: stopping arguably Europe’s most feared striker. Haaland has been in ruthless form in North America, sitting joint-second in the Golden Boot race with seven goals, alongside Kylian Mbappé and just behind Lionel Messi’s eight.
Speaking on the latest Lions’ Den episode, Guéhi looked ahead to facing his Manchester City teammate Haaland, who has been prolific in this tournament. “It’s going to be fun,” Guéhi said. “It is going to be fun, and I know he will be up for it. It’s going to be a challenge – it will be good to see some familiar faces, and we are going to try to do our best and try to get the win.”
Guéhi, who joined City from Crystal Palace in January, certainly understands the magnitude of the duel, having faced Haaland seven times in domestic competition during his Palace days before the transfer to the Etihad. Yet the England defense as a unit has shown commendable resilience heading into the quarter-final, with a crucial test awaiting when they lock horns with Norway on Saturday in Miami, a semi-final spot very much within reach.
As both teams settle into Florida, all eyes will be on whether Tuchel’s tactical approach—anchored by Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson—can stifle Haaland’s relentless threat. The match promises a compelling clash of styles, a high-stakes battle that could hinge on how well England’s back line can manage the City striker’s movement and finishing instinct while capitalizing on any opportunities of their own.
