Jordan Henderson has undergone surgery after fracturing his arm during the celebrations following England’s victory over Mexico on Sunday. The Brentford midfielder sustained the unusual injury when he landed awkwardly while attempting to jump over the advertising hoardings along the sideline. Although Henderson did not take part in the match, he was stretchered off the pitch and given oxygen as he left the field.
Henderson later took to social media to announce that he had surgery in Kansas City, where England’s World Cup base is currently located. “Surgery done! Let’s get ready for the big one Saturday,” he wrote on Instagram. “Thank you to all the staff that looked after me at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. Especially the three surgeons who carried out the operation.”
The 36-year-old is expected to miss the remainder of the tournament but will stay with the squad throughout. Henderson has previously featured in England’s campaign, having appeared as a substitute in the 2-0 group-stage win over Panama, which made him the first male player to participate in four World Cups.
Fans of England have become known for gathering in front of supporters after each victory to sing with the team, a scene repeated throughout the tournament. It is understood that England manager Thomas Tuchel will advise his players to avoid jumping over the hoardings in order to prevent a repeat of Henderson’s accident.
Henderson’s injury compounds Tuchel’s selection concerns as England brace for a quarter-final with Norway in Miami this Saturday. Declan Rice, Reece James and Marc Guehi all sat out Wednesday’s group training, instead completing individual indoor sessions. Guehi was out as a precaution with a muscular issue, while Rice continues to manage a hamstring and lower back problem, and James has been sidelined since picking up a hamstring injury in England’s opening match against Croatia. There is no indication the trio will be unavailable for the Norway game.
