‘They’re Full of Crap’: Boston Celtics Exec Roasted By NBA Insider for Jaylen Brown Trade Excuse

By admin — In News — July 8, 2026

A prominent NBA insider labels Brad Stevens’ justification for trading Jaylen Brown as nonsense. When the Celtics failed to broker a deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo last month, most voices around the league assumed Brown was off the table in trade talks. They were wrong. Even after the Milwaukee Bucks legend was dealt to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster move, Boston unexpectedly began listening to offers for the MVP-caliber forward from other teams.
Then Boston fans’ fears materialized last week. Brown was on the trading block, and the destination was the same team that eliminated them in the playoffs—the Philadelphia 76ers. Yet that wasn’t the most troubling part of the package. For the five-time All-Star, the Celtics received a washed-up Paul George, first-round picks in 2028 and 2031, and second-rounders in 2028 and 2030. It’s a surprisingly modest haul given rumors that Boston was seeking at least four first-round picks.
When Stevens was asked to justify the deal, he said the motivation was about roster “optionality” rather than a rift with Brown. Tim McMahon of ESPN, however, calls that explanation bullshit. McMahon, speaking on Hoop Collective, said the Celtics’ stance “was full of crap” and that the relationship with Brown did deteriorate and likely influenced the decision. In McMahon’s view, there was a driving factor in moving Brown before next season, implying that the relationship had reached a point of no return.
The upshot is that the Celtics appear to have taken a step back for 2026-27, perhaps hoping to flip George’s expiring contract and the future draft assets for another star down the line. But many observers question whether it was the right move at this moment. The breakup, the timing, and the price all left fans and analysts debating whether Boston truly improved its core or simply reset the clock on a potential championship window.
As the dust settles, the trade raises broader questions about organizational philosophy, player relationships, and the true cost of chasing long-term flexibility at the expense of immediate competitiveness. The Celtics’ decision to part with Brown, paired with the rough return, has sparked extensive discussion about Stevens’s strategy and whether the club’s front office is positioning itself to contend in the near term or to pivot toward a different, perhaps more speculative, route to sustained success.
