Colts announce that Adam Vinatieri will be inducted into franchise’s Ring of Honor

On Wednesday, the Indianapolis Colts announced that legendary placekicker Adam Vinatieri will become the newest member of the franchise’s Ring of Honor, the same year he is set to be enshrined in Canton, Ohio, as part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026 later this summer. Vinatieri is slated for induction on Sunday, October 18, during the 1 PM EST matchup against their longtime rival, the Tennessee Titans.
When it comes to Vinatieri, the unquestioned GOAT of kicking, it had long been assumed he would eventually join the ranks with his prolific Colts teammates who helped deliver a Super Bowl to Indianapolis. The current question is whether Vinatieri will be the last member from the 2006 Super Bowl champion squad to receive Ring of Honor recognition. In my view, there should still be a place for former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Bob Sanders, the sole defender to accomplish that feat for the Colts in franchise history, who was a catalyst for that Lombardi trophy-caliber defense down the stretch that season.
As for Vinatieri, the Super Bowl champion, NFL First-Team All-Pro, and Pro Bowler spent 14 seasons with the Colts after what many consider a Hall of Fame-caliber career in New England. During his Indianapolis tenure, Vinatieri aged like fine wine, extending his kicking career to an impressive 47 years old before injuries, wear and tear, and perhaps Father Time caught up with him in 2019.
From 2006 through his final season in Indianapolis, Vinatieri totaled 336 made field goals on 394 attempts (an 85.3% conversion rate) and 507 made extra points on 524 attempts (96.8%). He appeared in 205 regular-season games for the Colts, and his 19 postseason games stand as the most in franchise history. In Indianapolis, he became the NFL’s all-time leading scorer with 2,673 career points, a mark that includes an astounding 599 made field goals across his combined stints with New England and the Colts.
One of Vinatieri’s most enduring memories remains the Colts’ remarkable 2006 Super Bowl run. In the Divisional Round at Baltimore, he delivered a perfect 5-for-5 performance from field goal range, accounting for all of Indianapolis’ points in a 15-6 victory against a stout Ravens defense in hostile road conditions. That postseason success helped fuel the Colts’ championship run and cement Vinatieri’s status as a franchise-defining player in Indianapolis.
Beyond his reliability in high-pressure moments, Vinatieri was a respected veteran presence and leader within the Colts’ locker room in his later years. This latest honor is long overdue and richly deserved, recognizing not only his on-field excellence but also his lasting impact on the organization and its fans. Vinatieri’s Ring of Honor induction, paired with his Hall of Fame recognition in Canton, will ensure his legacy endures as a cornerstone of Colts history and a benchmark for future generations of kickers.
