The Tennessee Vols’ path to the College Football Playoff actually hinges on just 3 games

The Tennessee Vols aren’t regarded as a legitimate College Football Playoff contender heading into the 2026 season, and in today’s landscape that label isn’t as decisive as it once was. Even so, that reality doesn’t erase the underlying challenge of building a playoff-caliber team. A program starting a freshman quarterback, coming off an 8-5 campaign, and lacking a roster saturated with projected first-round picks rarely presents itself as a playoff favorite on paper. I understand the sentiment: there are other programs that appear more equipped to contend for a spot in the playoff. Yet past history has shown that predictions aren’t fate. Teams deemed unlikely can defy expectations.
We’ve seen programs defy the odds in recent years. No one predicted Indiana would contend for a national title last season, and Brent Venables faced questions at Oklahoma after a 6-7 season in 2024, only for the Sooners to reach the playoff in 2025. In today’s college football climate, rosters turn over rapidly and depth is a moving target, which has increased parity across the sport. That makes forecasting fall outcomes exceedingly tricky.
The notion that anything precedes the 12-team playoff is increasingly outdated. The reputations and traditions of programs are nice to discuss over a drink with a friend, but those factors don’t reliably forecast what will happen on the field. I’m skeptical about Tennessee’s chances of reaching the playoff in 2026, yet I do see a plausible path, and it’s not as far-fetched as it might seem.
The SEC’s shift to a nine-game conference schedule this season adds another layer of challenge. The move complicates the landscape in ways that aren’t entirely clear yet, especially when considering how the playoff selection process will adapt to an expanded schedule. There will be plenty of debate this fall about how the committee weighs a ninth SEC game and how that affects Georgia Tech, Alabama, LSU, and other contenders within the conference.
Despite the uncertainty, three games stand out as pivotal in Tennessee’s quest to reach the playoff. First is the opener at Georgia Tech on Sept. 12. The Volunteers must win this non-conference clash. Beginning the year with a loss to a non-conference opponent, especially on the road at night against a young quarterback such as Faizon Brandon or George MacIntyre, would be a difficult hurdle to clear. It’s not impossible, but it’s a game Tennessee cannot afford to drop if it hopes to position itself for a playoff run.
Second, the home meeting with Alabama on Oct. 17 stands out as a must-win. A victory in this high-profile conference clash would be a significant notch on the Vols’ resume and could be instrumental in vaulting them into playoff consideration. A signature win over a traditional rival would carry weight with the selection committee and energize the fan base during critical late-season momentum. The outcome of this game could influence Tennessee’s perceived potential and the narrative surrounding their season.
Finally, the home date with LSU on Nov. 21 looms as another crucial hurdle. The Tigers are expected to be strong in the SEC, and beating them at home would not only bolster Tennessee’s credentials but also reinforce their standing as a legitimate top-tier contender within the conference. A win in that matchup would again provide a defining moment on the résumé, helping to balance the schedule and improve the Committee’s perception of the Vols’ trajectory.
In short, while the path to the playoff for Tennessee in 2026 isn’t straightforward and the initial outlook may not scream “playoff team,” there are tangible routes to reach the postseason if the program navigates the schedule effectively and seizes the right opportunities. The nine-game SEC schedule adds complexity, the quarterback situation remains unproven, and national perception leans cautious. Yet college football’s history of surprises—where prediction meets reality—means Tennessee isn’t eliminated from playoff contention by any means. A few well-timed wins, especially against Alabama and LSU, and a strong performance in the early non-conference slate could reshape the narrative and keep the Vols in the conversation as the season unfolds.
