Nets’ Dutch Gaitley explains what makes Mikel Brown Jr. electric

The Brooklyn Nets entered the summer league with the hope that the early circuit would illuminate the younger members of the roster as they gear up for the 2026-27 NBA season. With the California Classic in the rearview mirror, Brooklyn now has a clearer read on Egor Demin’s readiness for the upcoming year, while one rookie in particular has stood out in limited action.
Guard Mikel Brown Jr. drew high praise from Nets summer league coach Dutch Gaitley after Brooklyn’s 100-79 victory over Golden State Warriors Blue in the Classic. “He’s obviously electric. He showed his ability to get downhill, and we need to help him figure out where his reads are, but I’m really impressed with his defense,” Gaitley said. Brown logged 10 points and four assists in 19 minutes of action.
“I think he’s giving great effort, something he’s not known for,” Gaitley added. “He’s known for his off-the-dribble shooting, his ability to get into the paint, but I was really impressed with his defensive compete level and his effort to execute our staples.” Gaitley emphasized Brown’s maturity, noting his four assists to just two turnovers in a short stint. “He’s obviously only played 19 minutes, but his ability to anticipate rotations a step or two ahead is really important,” the coach said.
Brown, 20, was the No. 6 overall pick by the Nets in the 2026 NBA Draft. Even though Brooklyn invested heavily in guard positions last year, the former Louisville Cardinal is expected to be a factor next season. At this stage of the offseason, it appears Brown is competing with Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf for the starting point guard role, and he’s started strong in Summer League play.
“Just be myself. Dutch and Jay [Hernandez], and the whole coaching staff told me to be myself, go out there and make plays, and that’s what I did,” Brown said after Monday’s win over Warriors Blue. It remains to be seen how much he will play as the Nets transition to the Las Vegas Summer League later this week, but his early impact has left a lasting impression on the team and coaching staff.
This report originally appeared on Nets Wire and offers insights into what makes Mikel Brown Jr. stand out, highlighting his electric pace, defensive tenacity, and growing understanding of team rotations that could shape Brooklyn’s guard depth in the months ahead.
