Cristiano Ronaldo Reveals His ‘Siuuu’ Celebration Was Born in the USA

Cristiano Ronaldo has finally opened up about the origin of one of sports history’s most iconic celebrations. In a recent interview with Soccer.com, the Portugal captain clarified that his famous “Siuuu” celebration was never premeditated. Instead, it emerged spontaneously during a pre-season game in the United States back in 2013.
“I was in the USA, and we played against Chelsea,” Ronaldo recalled. “I don’t know where this celebration came from. I just scored a goal, and I did this… ‘Siuuu.’” He stressed that the moment was purely instinctive. “It was natural, to be honest; it was natural,” he said.
What started as a quick reaction soon took on a life of its own. Ronaldo noted that fans immediately embraced the move, shouting “Siuuu!” every time they saw him. The overwhelming response convinced him to incorporate it as a permanent element of his game-day routine.
“Since that moment, I started to do it,” he explained. “I feel like the supporters and the fans, when they see me they say, ‘Cristiano, Siuuuu!’ I say, ‘Wow,’ because people remember Cristiano because of the Siuuu, so it’s good. I can continue like that.”
The celebration made its debut during Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the 2013 International Champions Cup at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. After scoring, Ronaldo leapt into the air, spun, and landed in his trademark pose while shouting “Siuuu,” a moment that would become inseparably linked with his career.
Over the past decade, the celebration has transcended football, turning into a global pop culture phenomenon. Athletes across various sports—football, basketball, mixed martial arts, cricket and beyond—have imitated the move, while fans worldwide echo the signature chant inside stadiums and arenas.
Ronaldo has continued to break records since unveiling the celebration. Now in his sixth FIFA World Cup campaign, the Portuguese superstar recently became the first male player to score in six different World Cup tournaments after netting twice in Portugal’s victory over Uzbekistan.
The enduring popularity of Siuuuu isn’t limited to Ronaldo’s on-field exploits. It has permeated broader culture, fueling memes, marketing moments, and a lasting sense of identity for fans who recognize the roar that follows every goal. The moment of spontaneous celebration in 2013 thus gave birth to a symbol that many associate with Ronaldo’s charisma, dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
In the years since, the Siuuuu flourish has become more than a gesture; it is a cultural touchstone that resonates beyond football, echoing through stadiums, social media, and the broader world of sports and entertainment. As Ronaldo continues to write new chapters in his storied career, the Siuuuu moment remains a defining artifact of his enduring influence on the game and popular culture at large.
