Blue Jays’ Dylan Cease has bid for 2nd career no-hitter broken up by Giants in 9th inning

SAN FRANCISCO — Dylan Cease carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning Wednesday for the Toronto Blue Jays before Heliot Ramos of the Giants ended the bid with a line-drive single to center field. Cease was removed after that hit and received a standing ovation from the San Francisco crowd as Tyler Rogers pitched the final three outs on four pitches, preserving a 10-0 victory for Toronto. The 30-year-old right-hander threw a career-high 118 pitches, 81 of them for strikes, aiming for his second career no-hitter and the first solo no-hitter in the majors since 2024. Cease struck out 11, increasing his American League-leading total to 148.
Cease previously tossed a no-hitter for the San Diego Padres at Washington on July 25, 2024. Just eight days later, Blake Snell turned in a no-hitter for the Giants. Since then, there have been two combined no-hitters, including one in March by Tatsuya Imai, Steven Okert, and Alimber Santa of the Houston Astros; but no pitcher has achieved a solo no-hitter in the interim, as managers have increasingly pulled hurlers in the middle of hitless outings due to concerns about pitch counts and player health. In MLB history, 35 pitchers have thrown multiple no-hitters, with Mike Fiers of the Athletics being the most recent to accomplish the feat on May 7, 2019.
Cease retired the first 14 San Francisco hitters before issuing a walk to Willy Adames with two outs in the fifth inning. He also walked Drew Gilbert leading off the sixth and Rafael Devers with one out in the seventh. Toronto’s defense support kept the no-hitter intact through multiple tense moments. In the seventh, Adames hit a grounder up the middle; second baseman Ernie Clement ranged to the left side of the bag, made a sharp pickup, and fired to first for the out. In the eighth, Bryce Eldridge belted a drive to deep left-center, but center fielder Daulton Varsho sprinted over to make an excellent catch before colliding with the wall.
The Jays had plenty of run support, breaking the game open with a 10-0 win, and Toronto’s pitching staff finished off the last outs efficiently. The night prior, in Toronto’s 9-3 victory, the Blue Jays had retired the final 15 San Francisco hitters, underscoring the visitors’ dominance in the series and the blend of timely hitting and solid defense behind Cease. Cease’s performance highlighted a standout season for the Jays’ ace, who continues to lead the league in strikeouts while pursuing more milestones in a year already filled with remarkable pitching achievements.
