The buzz around the Toronto Raptors has intensified with the return of the player who carried the franchise to its lone NBA title. Kawhi Leonard’s return makes the Eastern Conference even more compelling, as Toronto could again emerge as a contender. Even without Leonard, the Raptors have remained competitive over the past seven years. Last season, they pushed a seven-game series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, who were later swept in the Eastern Conference finals by the eventual champions, the New York Knicks.
Fans are wondering if the Raptors will make more moves this offseason. With so much chatter surrounding franchise icon DeMar DeRozan, there’s hope for a nostalgic reunion this summer. DeRozan to Pistons versus Raptors speculation has grown. NBA insider Brett Siegel reported there’s a prevailing belief around the league that DeRozan could return to Toronto this offseason. “And then Toronto—that’s been kind of the hot name right now for DeMar DeRozan when you talk to people around the league,” Siegel said. “They see a reunion happening.”
DeRozan, who turns 37 next month, spent the first nine seasons of his career with Toronto, becoming the face of the franchise and earning fan admiration for his loyalty. Fans admired how he remained in Toronto even as other cornerstones like Vince Carter and Chris Bosh departed during their primes, and DeRozan repeatedly expressed his desire to stay. Now that Leonard has rejoined the Raptors, Siegel believes a DeRozan reunion could make a great deal of sense for the franchise. “Especially after they went and got Kawhi Leonard in that trade, now you potentially add DeMar DeRozan. It could potentially make a lot of sense there.”
