Falcons Recap: Michael Penix Jr. looks healthy, Kyle Pitts’ cap hit

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

The Atlanta Falcons are nearing the start of training camp, yet a few football-free weeks remain before players report to the Flowery Branch facility. Rookies will arrive first on July 24, followed by veterans on July 28, with the first official practice scheduled for July 29—three weeks from today. To help you push through the rest of the summer, here’s a roundup of the latest Falcons news and notable NFL stories.
In today’s Falcons Wire Recap, quarterback Michael Penix Jr. appears primed for a return, Kyle Pitts helps the team save $11 million, Matt Ryan’s official role comes into focus, and Brandon Dorlus earns some ESPN recognition.
The Falcons are hopeful that Penix will be officially cleared for contact ahead of training camp. Although a full healing period remains, Penix has been seen throwing at a quarterback camp. The “QB Stable” Instagram page shared a video featuring Penix with the caption, “Can confirm that he’s ready.”
We now have clearer information on Matt Ryan’s role within the organization, thanks to The Athletic’s Falcons insider Josh Kendall. While Ryan is described as serving as an extra arm at practice, the broader takeaway is that Ryan has the final say on all football-related matters. Kendall noted that Ryan “won’t stay out of practice drills,” and that the Falcons’ newly minted President of Football, a title that signals his close involvement, is primarily there to oversee the on-field product, with his most visible offseason duty being his participation as an additional throwing option during workouts.
Pitts’ three-year extension has freed up roughly $11 million in salary cap space for the 2026 season. For the current year, his cap hit is under $5 million. Over The Cap’s numbers indicate the Falcons currently sit with more than $37 million in available salary cap space.
In a fresh ESPN feature, Ben Solak spotlights Falcons defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus as Atlanta’s breakout candidate for the 2026 NFL season. Solak notes that much of Dorlus’s sack production has come after edge rushers forced quarterbacks up, yet he has leveraged his length and agility well to shed blocks and make tackles away from his frame. He excels as a looper or crasher in blitz packages, showing a knack for slimming down as he weaves through the line of scrimmage.
Meanwhile, Bijan Robinson has had a remarkable week. Following being named the NFL’s No. 1 running back in ESPN’s executives poll, Pro Football Focus placed Robinson atop its 2026 running back rankings. It’s unusual for a running back to justify a top-10 selection in the draft, but Robinson has demonstrated his worth since being chosen eighth overall in 2023, reinforcing his status as a standout talent and a focal point for the team’s offense.
