We are exactly 60 days away from Notre Dame kicking off their 2026 season against the Wisconsin Badgers at Lambeau Field. A hot topic this offseason surrounding this matchup has been Notre Dame’s uniforms. Historically, the Irish have worn a distinctive jersey in Shamrock Series games. Earlier today, the Irish released the kits they will wear for their 2026 Shamrock Series game on September 6.
The jerseys feature several eye-catching details, including the last names on the back. Traditionally, Notre Dame places name plates on the backs of their jerseys only for postseason matchups, a practice we saw during the 2024 College Football Playoffs. In this Shamrock Series edition, the backs will display name plates, which is being described as a marquee-level addition to a special edition uniform.
On the traditional home blue uniform, the sleeve design typically consists of the ND logo without stripes. In this Shamrock Series edition, two gold stripes run along the sleeves as a nod to the Green Bay Packers, given the game is being played at Lambeau Field, one of the NFL’s most storied venues. But the Packers tribute doesn’t stop there.
The overall color scheme of the uniform, which Notre Dame calls “deep blue,” harks back to the color of the historic jerseys worn by the ACME Packers in the 1920s. Additionally, the back neckline of the jerseys features 11 shamrocks, representing Notre Dame’s 12 national titles. An intriguing design element on the front of the jerseys highlights a distinctive number style that honors a former Notre Dame and Green Bay Packers legend.
Notre Dame explained that the numbers were inspired by the Paul Hornung era and serve as a nod to the Irish Heisman Trophy winner who became a Packers icon. The numerals are rendered in a sharp, blocky silhouette, and the custom mesh texture is patterned to echo the shape of the Packers’ oval-G logo. A small American flag adorns the front left shoulder to honor the country’s 250th anniversary.
Gold accents are abundant throughout the uniform, but one element I’m glad to see unchanged is the helmet. In past Shamrock Series designs, Notre Dame’s iconic helmets have sometimes been altered, but this look preserves the quintessential Fighting Irish helmet.
Notre Dame will face Wisconsin at Lambeau Field on September 6, with NBC carrying the game and a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. This matchup is among the many primetime slots on Notre Dame’s 2026 schedule.
