Kon Knueppel Opens Up on Charlotte Hornets Offseason Trades

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

The Charlotte Hornets have made waves this offseason by reshaping their roster through a series of bold trades. In a move shortly after the NBA Draft, Charlotte sent star guard LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Naz Reid and draft capital, signaling a clear recalibration of their core. The front office followed that up by shipping Miles Bridges to the Phoenix Suns and absorbing Dorian Finney-Smith’s contract along with three second-round picks from the Houston Rockets. These aggressive shifts marked a new direction for a team that had enjoyed a productive second half of the 2025-26 season, finishing 44-38 and just missing the playoffs after a loss to the Orlando Magic in the second Play-In Game.
“Definitely a change,” said Hornets star Kon Knueppel. “I think for the fans it’s a bit tough to watch because we saw some success and felt like we were on the right track. I’m not sure if ‘unconvinced’ is the exact word, but the front office decided they wanted to move in a different direction.” The Hornets leaned into a youth movement with these moves, aiming to build around Knueppel and Brandon Miller. In the draft, Charlotte also selected Hannes Steinbach and Christian Anderson with the 14th and 18th overall picks, respectively, signaling their commitment to developing a younger core.
The team now possesses substantial draft capital, giving them flexibility to add more young talent around Knueppel and Miller in the coming years or to leverage a bold trade for another star. “I think we’ve got a good team,” Knueppel continued. “We can build on what we did last year and keep getting better. The focus for us as individuals is continuous improvement, day by day. Looking ahead, I’m confident in where we stand as an organization.”
Heading into the 2026-27 season, Charlotte still brings solid talent to the floor, providing a real chance to make another Play-In appearance or even push into the playoff picture. While the immediate season might present different results than last year, the long-term plan is clear: the Hornets have set themselves up for sustained growth and opportunity with their offseason moves.
