It has been a two-year labor of love for students and staff at McDonald County High School, and this week they proudly unveiled a new home for the area’s students-only disc golf course. The club was founded in 2024 by Teacher and Coach Christopher Kane after he realized that traveling to neighboring cities to play the sport was the main obstacle keeping students from enjoying disc golf. To overcome this barrier, the team decided to build their own course on campus.
Funding support for the project came from major national disc golf organizations as well as local community members, enabling the group to open a nine-hole course that is exclusively for McDonald County High School students, right in their own backyard. The new course marks a significant milestone for the school as it expands its athletic offerings and provides a dedicated space for youth to engage in a sport that is growing in popularity.
“I wasn’t into disc golf until it came here. I was walking through the hallway one day, saw a poster on the wall, and decided, you know what? This might be fun,” said a rising junior at McDonald County High. The student’s enthusiasm is echoed by Coach Kane, who explained how he leveraged national resources to get the project off the ground. He used the Professional Disc Golf Association’s (PDGA) avenues, as well as EDGE Disc Golf—the Educational Disc Golf Experience—and their affiliated websites that promote the growth of the sport. By filling out the necessary grant applications and following the guidance provided by these organizations, Kane and his team were able to transform their idea into a tangible, student-centered facility.
Looking ahead, Coach Kane hopes the initiative will inspire other schools in the region to establish their own disc golf clubs. He envisions a healthy, friendly competition between neighboring communities, much like what already exists in other sports, fueling increased participation and excitement for the sport.
As the project moves forward, the community is reminded that this new nine-hole, student-only course is a testament to what can be achieved when students, educators, and supporters collaborate to create opportunities that align with students’ interests and provide safe, accessible outlets for recreation and skill development. This milestone complements ongoing improvements at McDonald County High School and reinforces the school’s commitment to broad, inclusive extracurricular offerings that foster teamwork, discipline, and physical activity.
