In recent weeks, the Cleveland Guardians have faced their toughest adversary not on the field but in the training room: injuries. Those concerns had been relatively muted for the pitching staff until now, but Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins changed that narrative. Royce Lewis launched a ball directly off Tim Herrin’s left elbow, striking the area near his throwing arm. The exit velocity on Lewis’s hit reached about 90 mph, a sharp reminder of how quickly a promising performance can be interrupted by misfortune.
Herrin reacted immediately, removing his glove, clutching his arm, and slamming the ground in visible frustration before making his way toward Cleveland’s dugout, where he was met by the team’s head trainer. Unsurprisingly, Herrin departed the game, with Shawn Armstrong stepping in as Cleveland’s new pitcher. Given Herrin’s initial response, many observers braced for the worst. Yet the initial medical news offered some relief: X-rays on the elbow returned negative, and the team has officially described the injury as a left elbow contusion.
Manager Stephen Vogt provided an update after the game, noting that the injury is a contusion just above the elbow and that Herrin is sure to experience significant soreness. However, he emphasized that there is no fracture and that time will determine the severity of the recovery. “It’s a contusion just above the elbow. Obviously, going to be really sore. So we need to—time will tell, but fortunately, no break or anything like that,” Vogt said.
Herrin has pitched to a 3.06 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP this season and has recorded a 32 percent strikeout rate. He is also one of only two left-handers in Cleveland’s bullpen, making his potential absence particularly impactful given the current composition of the relief corps.
Even though the team has ruled out a fracture, the injury still presents potential short-term hurdles for the Guardians. The bullpen has been in need of depth and a fresh arm for several weeks, showing signs of strain as the All-Star break approaches. If Herrin is sidelined for an extended period, Cleveland has a few options to consider for filling his role in the bullpen. Left-handers Logan Allen and Will Dion could provide additional depth, while Codi Heuer could emerge as an intriguing alternative for relief duty.
As Vogt indicated, the good news is that Herrin did not suffer a break. Nevertheless, the injury could still complicate the Guardians’ bullpen dynamics in the near term, potentially prompting strategic moves to ensure a reliable left-handed option remains available at the back end of games. The team will likely monitor Herrin closely and determine a concrete timeline as more imaging and evaluations become available.
