Kip Lewis reveals why he returned to Oklahoma for senior season

Kip Lewis’ decision to return for his redshirt senior season with the Oklahoma Sooners ranked among the most significant offseason wins. In Norman, Lewis has already built an impressive resume, totaling 209 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, and five sacks, along with two interceptions that he returned for touchdowns. Yet his impact extends beyond numbers. Lewis has emerged as one of the emotional anchors of the Sooners’ locker room, providing leadership and a steady presence that teammates and coaches alike trust.
Although the NFL presented an option, Lewis believed another year under head coach Brent Venables would position him for long-term success. In a video shared by Oklahoma, he opened up about the considerations that guided his decision to stay in Norman for another season. “I talked to a lot of people,” Lewis explained. “Mostly, my family and then my dad. He was just giving me key points that he felt I should have come back with. I mostly spoke to a couple of my teammates, like John Mateer and Isaiah Sategna, to get their thoughts on what their plan was. I asked Danny Stutsman for advice and talked to him for a little bit. The advice from Danny really stood out to me.”
Receiving guidance from Stutsman appears to have played a pivotal role in Lewis’ choice. Stutsman faced a similar crossroads after a strong 2023 season and chose to remain in Norman for 2024, capping that year with another standout campaign. That decision ultimately helped Stutsman earn a fourth-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. Lewis’ return signals a parallel path: a commitment to continued development and another chance to bolster his draft stock.
By opting to stay, Oklahoma gains one of the most experienced and talented linebackers in college football for at least another season. Following a path similar to Stutsman’s, Lewis is betting on growth, refinement, and the opportunity to raise his draft profile even further. If he sustains the level of leadership and performance he has shown throughout his career, his final year in Norman could cement his status as one of the top defensive players in college football.
