BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBRE/WYOU) — Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, made his second rehab appearance Wednesday night, this time with the Toronto Blue Jays’ Triple-A affiliate. In the Buffalo Bison’s matchup against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Scherzer worked four innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits. The RailRiders touched him up for five runs, including a home run, as the future Hall of Famer struck out five batters in his minor-league showcase.
Through two Minor League rehab assignments, Scherzer has yet to secure a win or a winless mark, standing 0-2. Even with an eight-time MLB All-Star on the mound, Buffalo could not contain SWB on Wednesday. The RailRiders’ right-hander Alexander Cornielle outdueled Scherzer, delivering a dominant performance over 5.2 innings with just a single hit allowed. Cornielle fanned seven batters and issued three walks, completely controlling the Buffalo offense during his time on the hill.
The RailRiders continued to punish Buffalo pitching in the second game of the series, with Tyler Hardman continuing his hot streak. The RailRiders third baseman belted his third home run in as many games, launching a three-run shot off Scherzer in the opening frame. Oswaldo Cabrera and J.C. Escarra each contributed RBI via sacrifice flies, aiding Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s early lead.
With the win, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre improves to 9-4 in the second half of the International League season, placing them one game behind the Durham Bulls for first place in the IL East Division. The six-game series will resume on Thursday, July 9, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Sahlen Field.
