Real Madrid reach agreement to extend midfield mainstay’s contract until 2031 amid Manchester United interest – Romano

In a breaking report from Fabrizio Romano, the transfer saga surrounding Aurelien Tchouameni has reached a decisive conclusion and the player is set to remain at Real Madrid. The French midfielder had long been linked with a departure from the club, with Manchester United repeatedly identified as his primary target to replace Casemiro this summer. Reports suggested that Madrid hoped to sell him to secure a financial return that could help fund a fresh addition.
Yet now it appears the tides have turned. Tchouameni has agreed terms on a renewal with Real Madrid, and there is little doubt about where his future lies for the next season. The new contract is expected to run until 2031, and the formalities are anticipated to be completed after the World Cup. While Madrid’s decision to retain the midfielder is understandable, the renewal was not just a reflection of his own desire to stay; it also reflected the persistent insistence of the manager. Jose Mourinho reportedly played a pivotal role, personally urging the player to remain at the club amid the transfer chatter and driving the process forward. The Portuguese coach did not want to see Tchouameni leave this summer and was a strong advocate for continuity.
Mourinho is said to believe that Tchouameni perfectly fits his long-term plans—a combative, physically imposing presence with an elite mentality. In discussions with the player, Mourinho reportedly assured Tchouameni that he would be a central figure for him next season, effectively guaranteeing a starting spot. This assurance underscores the expectation that Tchouameni will line up as Real Madrid’s defensive midfielder, a role in which the club is unlikely to pursue another pivot player this summer. Moreover, the midfielder is poised to become one of Real Madrid’s top earners, with a salary approaching €13 million, as reported by Ben Jacobs.
The renewal also clarifies Real Madrid’s midfield blueprint for the forthcoming campaign, with all indicators now pointing to Tchouameni and Jude Bellingham as established starters. Federico Valverde and Arda Guler are anticipated to occupy the next tier of the pecking order, while Bernardo Silva’s recent addition creates questions about his precise role within the lineup. On the other hand, Eduardo Camavinga appears to be moving closer to an exit. Following Tchouameni’s renewed contract, Camavinga’s chances of departing have increased significantly, marking a notable shift in Real Madrid’s midfield dynamics as the season approaches.
