New York Giants’ Cam Skattebo ranked among NFL’s worst starting RBs

Pro Football Focus has released its latest rankings of the league’s 32 projected starting running backs, and Cam Skattebo of the New York Giants sits at No. 24. The placement reflects expectations for the upcoming year, yet it has generated conversation given the high hopes surrounding Skattebo’s potential role in the Giants’ offense under head coach John Harbaugh. Skattebo’s ranking follows a promising, though injury-shortened, 2025 season in which he flashed elite playmaking ability before suffering a season-ending injury in Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles. His performance underscored his dual-threat potential, which could anchor New York’s ground game if he can stay healthy.
In limited action last year, Skattebo provided a spark for the Giants’ offense before his injury in the Week 8 rematch with Philadelphia. His ability to contribute as both a runner and a receiver helped him earn an 80.5 PFF grade, placing him 12th among qualified running backs. He was among a select group of backs—alongside Jahmyr Gibbs, Josh Jacobs, and Bijan Robinson—who finished the season with an 80.0-plus grade as both a runner and a receiver. If he can maintain good health, Skattebo has the potential to serve as the engine of New York’s offense in 2026.
Tyrone Tracy Jr., Skattebo’s backfield partner, received an honorable mention in the rankings. Tracy re-emerged as a key contributor for the Giants last season after spending time as something of a forgotten man in the backfield. He ultimately led the team with 740 rushing yards and added 288 receiving yards, totaling over 1,000 yards from scrimmage for the season. Depending on Skattebo’s health, Tracy is likely to remain a significant factor in the Giants’ backfield as 2026 approaches.
Despite the encouraging indicators from Skattebo’s limited action, the overall ranking signals ongoing concerns about consistency, workload management, and the Giants’ offensive line play. As the 2026 season nears, Skattebo will aim to build on his early success and demonstrate that he belongs among the league’s top starting backs. The discussion around his ranking highlights the Giants’ hope that he can be a durable, productive centerpiece of their offense if he can stay healthy and continue developing within the pro-style system.
