Ever since the news broke about former Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold, fans have been buzzing about how the team will respond to the loss. Even before Arnold’s departure became a reality, Lions general manager Brad Holmes and his staff had already invested significant effort into strengthening the depth of the secondary. Still, losing Arnold—whom many expected to be the other starting outside corner opposite D.J. Reed—leaves a noticeable hole in the lineup.
So, where does Detroit go from here? That exact question is what my good friend Meko Scott and I tackled in our latest video on the Pride of Detroit YouTube channel. While most of the major moves through trades and free agency have already occurred, there is still time before the regular season begins to shape the cornerback room.
To kick off our discussion, we explored the option that would likely be the most exciting: trading for a cornerback. Several viewers have highlighted Denzel Ward of the Cleveland Browns as a potential target, and we ran through a few other names that could be intriguing fits for Detroit. Spoiler alert: I would advise tempering expectations regarding a trade-heavy solution for Detroit’s cornerback needs.
Next, we considered the possibility of adding a veteran in free agency once training camp gets underway. In my view, this approach seems more plausible given the cost dynamics and the availability of quality veteran options. The veteran add could provide immediate impact and leadership while the team continues to evaluate its younger players.
Finally, we delved into the long-term viability of the current secondary depth if Detroit decides to stay with the players already in the building. This angle examines whether the existing mix can be trusted to compete at a high level and how the coaching staff might maximize the strengths of the available personnel.
