The San Diego Padres should at least entertain the trade nobody wants to admit out loud: Mason Miller. Yes, really. It sounds wild because Miller has been nothing short of ridiculous, historically so. He has emerged as one of the best relievers in MLB, perhaps the best, and the Padres’ late-inning strategy shifts entirely when he stands at the ready to close. A perfect save record this deep into the season isn’t normal; it’s almost absurd. Which is exactly why San Diego has to consider it.
Relievers are inherently volatile. They always have been, and they always will be. Even the greatest can lose value quickly because one injury, one command hiccup, or one rough stretch can flip the conversation in an instant. Miller’s value may never be higher than it is right now, and the Padres aren’t in a position where they can simply ignore that reality. This isn’t about dumping him. It’s about being honest.
If San Diego truly believes it is a contender, keep Miller and tailor the trade deadline plan to shorten games. There’s no argument there: a dominant closer is a terrifying weapon come October, and Miller gives the Padres a concrete identity when they have a lead. But if the next few weeks reveal a team that’s more noise than substance, the front office must be ruthless. Not emotional. Not proud. Ruthless.
Miller could fetch a return that genuinely alters the organization. Not a couple of spare parts. Not a polite prospect package. A real haul. Contenders chasing bullpen certainty will line up, because they always talk themselves into paying premium prices for the final three outs.
The Padres crave star power, but what they need more is direction. Keeping Miller makes sense if San Diego is serious about contending. Trading him makes sense if the Padres are not. The only unacceptable option is pretending the question is too shocking to raise.
