Barcelona rival Liverpool and Man Utd for teenager Herrington

Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester United are among a multitude of clubs chasing Colorado Rapids defender Lucas Herrington. The 18-year-old has emerged as one of the summer’s most coveted prospects, following a breakout showing at the World Cup with Australia. His performances have sparked a scramble across Europe, and the level of interest is striking. TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey reports that Everton, Aston Villa and Newcastle have joined the Premier League pursuit, while talks have taken place between Chelsea’s owners and Manchester City’s parent group. Bayern Munich, Ajax, Monaco and several other clubs are also monitoring Herrington.
Herrington’s World Cup qualifying story was a genuine coming of age. He became Australia’s youngest-ever starting player at the tournament, producing composed displays against Paraguay and Egypt that impressed scouts with his maturity and game awareness at such a young age. There was heartbreak as well, though, when his decisive penalty in the shootout defeat to Egypt in the last 32 clipped the crossbar. Even so, his bravery in stepping up drew praise from many, including Zlatan Ibrahimović, who publicly commended his courage.
The centre-back’s rise has been meteoric. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches, he joined Colorado from Brisbane Roar in January in a deal valued at less than £1 million. A few months on, the MLS side appears poised for a substantial profit. Colorado, however, retains leverage. While open to a sale for the right price, the Rapids would welcome a move that allows Herrington to remain on loan in MLS for another year before his European transition. Several interested clubs believe that such a pathway would aid his development.
For Liverpool, that patient approach aligns with their recruiting philosophy. Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have prioritized investing in elite young talent, and letting Herrington mature in the United States before heading to Europe would suit all parties involved. The intrigue around his future continues to grow, with his stock showing no signs of slowing.
Herrington has recently been named to the MLS All-Star squad to face Liga MX, set to line up alongside Lionel Messi later this month, a testament to his continued ascent. For those following United’s transfer strategy, there is speculation about whether Manchester United will aim to secure his services as part of a broader plan to cultivate a youthful spine for the squad.
As the transfer window progresses, the landscape remains fluid, with a wide field of suitors watching developments closely. Herrington’s combination of physical presence, technical poise and international potential makes him one of the most intriguing young defenders in world football, and clubs across Europe will be eager to secure his services in the near future.
