France is reinforcing security ahead of Thursday night’s World Cup quarter-final clash with Morocco in the United States. The interior ministry announced that security forces will be on high alert to ensure that the Foxborough showdown becomes a celebratory occasion for France back home, while also taking decisive action against any troublemakers.
France has a sizable Moroccan community, with about 2.2 million people either born in Morocco or of Moroccan descent living in the country. The upcoming match will be a rematch of the 2022 semifinal, which France won.
In Paris and the wider Île-de-France region, the authorities have banned the carrying of weapons or pyrotechnics. In the southern department of Aude, the sale and public consumption of alcohol are prohibited in response to the ongoing heatwave. As kickoff approaches, the French schedule includes a 10 p.m. (2000 GMT) start time, prompting the capital to extend outdoor dining and drinking hours for bars and restaurants until 2 a.m. Additionally, owners have agreed to halt alcohol sales for take-away and to provide free water to customers to keep people hydrated.
To further enhance safety for fans, Paris has implemented a temporary car ban in the popular Marais district from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. The goal is to create a secure and enjoyable atmosphere around the match while reducing disruption for residents and visitors alike. The security plan emphasizes visible police presence and rapid response capabilities to deter violence and disturbances, ensuring that the event proceeds smoothly for supporters on both sides.
As France prepares for the high-stakes game against Morocco, authorities are balancing celebration with vigilance, aiming to deliver a memorable, secure experience for fans in the lead-up to kick-off. This careful approach reflects lessons learned from past matches and a commitment to maintaining public safety during a globally watched sporting event.
