Brentford have announced the arrival of Callum Wilson, the former England and West Ham striker, on a free transfer with an initial 12-month contract. The 34-year-old joins the Bees after his deal with West Ham expired following the club’s relegation from the Premier League, and he becomes a free agent ahead of the upcoming season. Wilson only joined West Ham last year, and he departs the club after contributing seven goals in 35 league appearances.
Brentford head coach Keith Andrews welcomed the signing, saying: “Callum is someone that everyone will be familiar with. He has been a Premier League goalscorer for a long time. He gives us more options in that area of the pitch and will help Igor Thiago and Kaye Furo with the experience that he brings. He has that nous to score goals, as well as valuable experience around the training ground. This is another really good signing for us.”
Despite his age, Wilson is expected to provide competition for Brentford’s current striker Igor Thiago, who struck 22 Premier League goals in the 2025/26 season. The former England international is no stranger to the top flight, having previously played for AFC Bournemouth, Newcastle United, and West Ham. Across those spells, he has tallied 271 Premier League appearances and 95 goals. With the milestone of 100 top-flight goals potentially within reach, a return to the Premier League with Brentford offers Wilson a chance to reach the landmark.
West Ham were reportedly keen to retain Wilson for their upcoming Championship campaign and reportedly offered him a new contract, which was under consideration. However, the prospect of continuing in the Premier League ultimately led Wilson to opt for a move to Brentford. Several other clubs showed interest, including the three promoted sides—Hull City, Ipswich Town, and his boyhood club Coventry City—each keen to secure the striker’s signature.
At 34, and with an injury history that has limited his minutes in recent seasons, Wilson is expected to provide Brentford with an experienced option from the bench rather than as a regular starter. He embraced this role at West Ham, making 21 Premier League appearances as a substitute and scoring several crucial late goals, including a memorable 93rd-minute winner against Tottenham Hotspur.
Wilson becomes Brentford’s third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Jannik Schuster and Jaidon Anthony, the latter completing a reported £17 million move from Burnley earlier in the week. He arrives as the Bees continue to bolster their squad ahead of the new campaign, aiming to add depth and experience to their forward line and to provide valuable competition for the club’s attacking options. This strategic addition aligns with Brentford’s approach of layering seasoned players with young talent, to maintain their competitiveness in the top flight.
