Manchester United has announced plans for a new 100,000-seat stadium that will be built on land recently acquired from Indurent, located about 350 meters from Old Trafford. The club disclosed the stadium’s location on Thursday during the Wharfside Strategic Masterplan presentation. Although the venue will not be erected on land directly connected to Old Trafford, United says the project will safeguard the heritage and traditions of the current ground.
The new facility is set to become the centerpiece of a larger development described as a Stadium District, specifically designed for sport, entertainment, and year-round programming. The stadium is intended to act as the signature landmark of the broader Trafford Wharfside project, according to the Manchester Evening News. The masterplan presents an ambitious vision for Trafford Wharfside, including enhanced public transit links, improved rail access, and comprehensive walking and cycling networks. It envisions a mixed-use community that could generate 48,000 local jobs and deliver 15,000 new homes, with the stadium serving as the catalytic anchor. The plan is projected to deliver an annual boost of £7.3 billion ($9.78 billion) to the UK economy.
Collette Roche, CEO of the stadium development company, commented: “The Wharfside Masterplan represents another significant milestone in our journey to establish a world-class home for Manchester United at the heart of a vibrant, transformational district for Trafford and Greater Manchester. Together with our partners, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a destination that delivers enduring benefits for supporters, local communities, and the wider region for decades to come. The proposed stadium site is ideally positioned alongside Old Trafford, enabling us to preserve the heritage, traditions, and matchday rituals that matter so much to our supporters while also providing the connectivity and infrastructure required to deliver a truly world-class fan experience. We are committed to building a stadium with our supporters, not merely for them. Atmosphere, affordability, and accessibility will remain central to our plans, and we look forward to ongoing engagement with fans and other stakeholders as we progress into the next phase of design and development.”
The club’s announcement followed remarks from Trafford Council leader Tom Ross, who welcomed the masterplan as the start of a long journey toward realizing a world-class cultural and sporting destination. “We are excited to introduce the masterplan, which begins a long process to piece together what could happen and where, to bring this destination to life,” Ross stated. “We want to create a great place to be, not only on matchdays but every day, and we’re inviting as many residents and businesses as possible to help shape this vision through forthcoming consultations.”
