The National Women’s Soccer League has returned after both an international break and a CBA-mandated pause, bringing back the same level of action and excitement fans have come to expect. From surprising upsets and decisive game-winners to spectacular strikes, here are some standout moments from the league’s return to NWSL action.
Rodman shines with a brace, including a stoppage-time winner against the Houston Dash. The NWSL has always valued Trinity Rodman’s impact, and her performance in this return did not disappoint. Rodman found the back of the net twice for the Spirit, including a dramatic winner in the third minute of stoppage time. As she entered the attacking third, she faced three defenders but still pressed forward, delivering a shot that slipped past the goalkeeper at the far post. The Spirit currently sit in third place in the standings, and their two games in hand due to participation in the Concacaf W Champions Cup could reshape the race at the top.
Ashley Sanchez narrows the Golden Boot race with a brace against Seattle. Sanchez’s two goals against the Reign shorten Barbra Banda’s lead in the race for the league’s Golden Boot to two goals. She opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, firing from inside the box off a Seattle defender to redirect the ball into the net. Her second came in the 72nd minute after Evelyn Ijeh let the ball through, giving Sanchez a clear path behind Seattle’s defense. The two-goal performance helped push the Courage into sixth place and sets up an eagerly anticipated matchup against Sanchez’s former club, the Washington Spirit.
Chicago Stars stun the Utah Royals with a 3-2 victory. Chicago’s season had been a disappointment up to this point, as they sat in 15th place, but they delivered a standout performance at home against the Royals. All three of Chicago’s goals came from or around set-piece opportunities: a rebound off a free kick from outside the box, a direct free kick from Sam Staab, and a corner-kick finish. Staab’s strike caught Utah by surprise, with Mallory Swanson initially assisting by drawing the defense before Staab lashed the shot past Mandy McGlynn, piercing the Royals’ wall and sealing the lead.
Melanie Barcenas honors her idol with a left-footed stunner. San Diego Wave found themselves relying on an emerging homegrown star after Dudinha’s ACL injury opened a spot on the frontline. In stoppage-time of the first half, 18-year-old Barcenas delivered a long-range, left-footed strike to put the Wave ahead in their 2-0 win over Gotham FC. Barcenas’ early breakout moment showcased her potential and added another layer to the Wave’s attacking options.
These moments highlight the league’s return as a showcase of talent, depth, and drama, with players making immediate impacts and teams remounting their campaigns after the break.
