Chicago Cubs vs. Baltimore Orioles preview, Thursday 7/9, 12:35 CT

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

STACKING WINS: If the Cubs win this afternoon and sweep the Reds starting tomorrow, they will reach the All-Star break with a 56-40 record—16 games above .500, surpassing their season high of 15 when they stood 27-12 on May 8. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
WINNING IN CHARM CITY: The Cubs have won their last six games in Baltimore, dating back to a 3-2 victory on Aug. 18, 2022. They swept a three-game set in 2024 by scores of 9-2, 4-0, and 8-0, and have won the last two days by 5-2 and 9-7. The six straight road wins at an American League opponent are the Cubs’ second-longest streak in that category, behind an active nine-game run against the Athletics. They also put together five straight wins at Minnesota between 2015 and 2023, and achieved four-game winning streaks on the South Side against the White Sox on two occasions and once at Seattle. THURSDAY ON MY MIND: The Cubs are 4-0 on the road and 7-1 overall on Thursdays, their best mark on any weekday. They are 12-4 on Wednesdays, giving them a 19-5 record on Thursdays and Wednesdays combined. On all other days, they are 33-35. Last year, they finished 7-6 overall on Thursdays and 5-3 on that day specifically. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
PCA! PCA! PCA!: Pete Crow-Armstrong has six July games with a .476 batting average, a .577 on-base percentage, and a .952 slugging percentage (10-for-21) with a double, three home runs, six RBIs, three stolen bases, and six runs scored.
Cubs lineup: Orioles lineup: I’ll take the good David Peterson, please—the pitcher who held the Brewers to two runs across 5.2 innings. That other guy—the one who got crushed by the Cardinals? Not that guy, please.
Peterson last faced the Orioles on July 10, 2025, in Baltimore, and held them to one run in seven innings with no walks and six strikeouts. That’s the version we want tonight. Current Orioles hitters have been limited to a 5-for-36 line (.139) against Peterson, with 14 strikeouts in those matchups.
Trevor Rogers—no relation to the twin Rogers brothers, Tyler and Taylor—had 18 strong starts for Baltimore last season (1.81 ERA, 0.903 WHIP, only six home runs allowed in 109.2 innings), raising expectations for a continued rebound this year. He currently owns a 4.70 ERA and 1.316 WHIP, with nine homers allowed in 84.1 innings; his strikeout rate is down as well.
Rogers delivered a rare complete game in a losing effort against the Cubs on Aug. 1, 2025, at Wrigley Field, yielding one run over eight innings. The Cubs prevailed 1-0 in a game with just four hits, two credited to Carson Kelly.
