WOLFSBURG, Germany (AP) — Wolfsburg has announced that Danish football star Christian Eriksen will begin an individualized rehabilitation program in his home country following another on-field collapse last month. The club issued a concise update on Thursday, stating that it remains in regular contact with Eriksen and the medical team overseeing his care. Wolfsburg emphasized their ongoing well wishes for Eriksen and his rehabilitation process.
Eriksen, aged 34, collapsed after clutching his chest during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine in Odense on June 7. The incident evoked memories of his cardiac arrest at the European Championship five years earlier, as teammates formed a protective circle around him while medical staff attended to him. He was able to walk off the pitch on his own and was subsequently transported to the hospital for further examinations.
Eriksen, who had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implanted to support his heart after the 2021 cardiac arrest, provided an update the following day, saying he was “doing well” and had already returned home to be with his family. “As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major effect on both me and my family, but I want to assure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021,” Eriksen explained.
Last season, Eriksen signed a two-year contract with Wolfsburg as a free agent, joining the German club in September. Despite his arrival, he was unable to prevent the team’s relegation from the Bundesliga. In his final appearance for Wolfsburg, Eriksen wore the captain’s armband during the playoff defeat to Paderborn.
