Ice cream inspiration? Charley Hull feigns indulgence at Evian, cards 5-under 66

For someone known for indulging on the course, it seemed plausible that Charley Hull’s impressive back nine 31 at the Amundi Evian Championship on Thursday was inspired by an ice cream cone. Even the cameras caught the moment, and in 2026, the snippet “I think it was the ice cream” quickly went viral among golf fans. Yet the old adage about not always believing what you see on TV proved true. After reporters asked about the treat, Hull admitted, “I didn’t eat the ice cream. My boyfriend got it for my caddie, so I held it for a minute when he was putting my club in the bag.” She added that she does eat during tournaments, though her choices tend to skew toward bars and bananas. “I always eat every other hole,” she explained. “So I eat on the third, the fifth, and the seventh, and then pretty much every hole after that.”
So if not a dietary break, what exactly triggered Hull’s strong turnaround in France? She was 2-over through her first six holes, yet finished the round with birdie-birdie-par-eagle, placing herself in contention for her first major title. “I kind of just believed in myself and relaxed out there, took my time, and took advantage of the birdies,” the 30-year-old Hull said.
Coming into Evian, Hull was in her 11th event of the season. She had finished T-10 at the Chevron, T-2 at Riviera, and then missed the cut at Hazeltine in the year’s opening three majors. Through one round at Evian, she sits T-3, three behind Aki Iwai’s 8-under lead. France’s Perrine Delacour sits solo second after the opening 18 holes, two shots back of Iwai. “Very lucky to be here — it’s almost like a little holiday,” Hull said of Evian Resort Golf Club.
The Amundi Evian Championship, the LPGA’s fourth major of the season, returns to Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-les-Bains, France. Here’s how to watch and stream the tournament. The event again promises a field loaded with talent and the chance to add a major title to Hull’s resume. As players chase Iwai’s early lead, fans can expect a mixture of composure, big shots, and perhaps a few more moments that spark lively chatter off the course. The blend of elite competition and picturesque surroundings only heightens the intrigue surrounding Hull’s bid for major glory this week.
