NFL coach says quiet part out loud about Panthers DL Derrick Brown’s situation in Carolina

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

Despite being one of the NFL’s most gifted and productive defensive linemen, Carolina Panthers star Derrick Brown has spent much of his career flying under the radar. That may be about to change, though, as he starts to grab the mainstream attention that his on-field impact deserves heading into his sixth pro season. In ESPN’s annual positional rankings, which reflect votes from league executives, coaches, and scouts, Brown was pegged as the fifth-best defensive tackle for the 2026 campaign.
ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler shared a quote from a veteran assistant coach that underscores Brown’s undeniable influence at the line of scrimmage: “Brown is a force at the line of scrimmage, especially in the run game. We actively ran our running plays completely away from him. That’s how good he is. The only reason he isn’t a household name is that he plays in Carolina.” That last point may be closer to truth than ever before, as Brown begins to shed that quieter reputation. The Panthers have scheduled three prime-time games this season, offering Brown an unprecedented chance to showcase his talents to a national audience.
Last year Brown enjoyed a breakout performance in several ways. He set a personal best with 5.0 sacks and contributed 73 total tackles, continuing to anchor the Panthers’ line. His presence helped lift a struggling defense from their 2024 ranking—when he missed 16 of 17 games and the unit was last in the league—to a much more respectable 16th in 2025. Those improvements highlighted how Brown’s run-stopping versatility and interior disruption can influence a defense’s overall effectiveness.
On ESPN’s ranking, Brown landed in a top tier position, with at least one ballot placing him at No. 1. He was outranked by only four other interior disruptors—Leonard Williams of the Seattle Seahawks, Jeffery Simmons of the Tennessee Titans, Jalen Carter of the Philadelphia Eagles, and Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs—each of whom finished higher on the outlet’s list. This level of recognition marks a notable shift for a player who has often operated in relative anonymity despite his impact.
Brown’s elevated profile comes as the Panthers prepare for a season that could redefine his career trajectory. The team’s decision to feature him prominently in their game plans, along with the higher stage provided by prime-time slots, should give him the national platform to demonstrate that his influence extends far beyond the box score. If he can sustain or improve upon last year’s production, and if the Panthers’ defense continues its upward arc, Brown’s reputation could rapidly catch up to his on-field prowess.
