Former Houston Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks remains a free agent as training camp nears, prompting questions about whether Texas might consider bringing him back to bolster a contending roster. Could the Texans see value in reacquiring a veteran who could provide reliable production and leadership behind a rising group of receivers? Or might Cooks himself prefer a return to Houston as a No. 3 option behind Pro Bowler Nico Collins and the young, promising Jayden Higgins?
Cooks recently spoke with The Athletic’s Tim Graham, expressing enthusiasm for the upcoming training camp and a clear desire to join a team’s sessions in the near future, with Buffalo as his preferred destination to reunite with Josh Allen. The veteran pass-catcher, a first-round pick who began his NFL journey with the New Orleans Saints before stints with the Bills, Patriots, Rams, Texans, and Cowboys, emphasized his longing to spend a full offseason with a team that can maximize his abilities. “Buffalo is the place I’d love to be,” Cooks told Graham. “I want to prove that to them and have a full offseason with them. Both sides are figuring things out. We’ll see, but hopefully something transpires because I love going to training camp. That’s where you build that callus.”
Now entering his 13th season at age 32, Cooks is all about contributing to a playoff-contending squad. His career has included stops across several franchises after his breakout early years with the Saints. In Houston, he emerged as a primary weapon following DeAndre Hopkins’ trade to Arizona, delivering back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2020 and 2021. Across three seasons with the Texans, Cooks amassed 228 receptions for 2,886 yards and 15 touchdowns. As he remains a free agent, he sits just shy of 10,000 career receiving yards, a milestone that underscores his consistent production throughout a durable NFL career. Yet, despite his personal accomplishments, a missing Super Bowl ring remains a standout gap in his resume, and he has made it clear that a championship would be a top priority as he contemplates his next destination.
One compelling reason Cooks would value a return to Buffalo is the chance to continue linking with Josh Allen, a quarterback he regards with high regard for his notable “it factor” entering the 2026 season. “From afar, you heard the things going on inside the receiver room. In my mind, ‘OK, this was an opportunity where you got guys that can play, but also there’s a niche in there where, if I can come in and do what I have to do, I’m contributing,’” Cooks explained. “It was the totality of things, but who wouldn’t want to play with Josh Allen?”
As for the Texans, their current receiver situation could become a point of focus as they chart the franchise’s next chapter under fourth-year quarterback C.J. Stroud. The team could use veteran leadership and additional depth at the position, depending on how Tank Dell’s injury progresses and whether the front office views a veteran presence as essential for a young quarterback’s development. Training camp is set to open on July 21 at NRG Stadium, where the team will begin evaluating its wide receiver group and determining the best path forward for 2026 and beyond.
Cooks’ future remains uncertain, with the Bills representing a strong potential landing spot if both sides can align on terms and a role that fits within the team’s offensive plans. Whether that path will lead him back to Buffalo or bring him closer to a return to Houston—or another destination entirely—will unfold as teams finalize their rosters ahead of the new season. For Cooks, the priority appears clear: join a contender, contribute immediately, and chase a championship, all while embracing the grind and opportunity that training camp affords.
