Five-star Texas commit John Meredith III loses UIL eligibility appeal

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

Five-star cornerback and Texas commit John Meredith III had his appeal denied by the UIL State Executive Committee in a 3-2 vote on Thursday, July 9, leaving him ineligible to participate in varsity athletics for North Crowley High School. Despite this ruling, Meredith remains eligible to compete at his former school, Euless Trinity.
Meredith transferred from Euless Trinity to North Crowley in January and was later ruled ineligible for his senior season for athletic transfer purposes. That decision came with a 5-2 vote at an 11-6 district executive committee meeting. Both Meredith and North Crowley were granted the option to appeal the district committee’s determination to the UIL State Executive Committee, which ultimately denied the appeal on Thursday.
Rankings highlight Meredith’s prominence as a standout prospect. He sits as the No. 2 overall player in the USA TODAY High School Sports composite football rankings and is the No. 4 overall prospect in the 2027 class according to 247Sports. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior was a two-way contributor at Euless Trinity, earning MaxPreps All-American honors as a junior and earning selection to the Under Armour All-American game.
Meredith most recently announced his commitment to play for Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns on June 19. His case marked one of two notable Texas high school football eligibility decisions announced on Thursday. In another outcome, four-star quarterback Colton Nussmeier, a Georgia commit, was ruled ineligible for his senior season at Denton Ryan, following a 4-1 vote by the UIL State Executive Committee.
This update reflects ongoing eligibility disputes within Texas high school football’s transfer and amateur status framework, illustrating how transfer rules can impact even highly touted recruits. The original reporting on this development appeared on USA TODAY, providing context for Meredith’s national ranking, the nature of his transfer, and the implications for his college commitment and future in high school football.
