LAS VEGAS — Brandon Royval is not about to become a stepping stone for the next wave of flyweight contenders. The 17-9 MMA fighter, with a 7-5 UFC mark, is booked to face Lone’er Kavanagh (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) on the main card of UFC 329 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, airing on Paramount+. Royval, a former title challenger, arrives riding back-to-back losses to current champion Joshua Van and to Manel Kape. His notable performance against Van at UFC 317 earned both Fight of the Night and Fight of the Year, underscoring the high level he can reach. Kavanagh, who upset former champ Brandon Moreno in his first main event at UFC Fight Night 268, earned the shot to meet Royval in short order, a consequence Royval says he anticipated.
“I could see it coming,” Royval stated during Wednesday’s UFC 329 pre-fight press conference. “As soon as that fight was over, I figured they’d present this next. I actually thought I had a fight lined up, and then he won, and they were like, ‘Actually, this is the fight we’re going to make.’ So that’s how it unfolded. I knew we were probably fighting the next day after he won, so, yeah, they made this fight quick.”
Royval has already handed Tatsuro Taira the first loss of his career, demonstrating that facing rising contenders is not unfamiliar territory for him. “I’ve always been this way, but I take everything personally,” Royval explained. “This is personal. This is someone trying to take my spot. I’ve been in the top five of this division for perhaps three or four years. I’m not precisely sure, but most of my UFC tenure has been spent in the top five, and I take it personally that they’re trying to push me out. It’s my job to make a statement and stay in there.”
With six performance bonuses on his résumé, Royval acknowledges that the pairing with Kavanagh might not be the most pleasant draw, but he remains confident the matchup will deliver. “They made this fight to be exciting, and that’s exactly what’s going to happen,” he said. “There’s a reason they booked this fight well in advance and right after he won. It’s an exciting contest to make, and it’s what they want. This is why I get paid, this is why I’m here. The opportunity is to fill my pockets and, more importantly, to make a statement by producing another high-level, high-performance performance.”
Royval’s perspective is clear: he intends to silence any doubters who might view him as merely a gatekeeper, and he aims to reinforce his standing among the division’s elite by delivering a victory that shouts from the arena. His resolve is to reclaim momentum, prove he belongs in the upper echelon, and show that the flyweight title chase remains very much within reach. This fight isn’t just another date on the calendar; it’s a crucial test in a career that has consistently shown Royval’s willingness to take risks, push the pace, and fight with an intensity that makes him a memorable figure in one of MMA’s most competitive weight classes. The result could shape the trajectory of Royval’s journey in the UFC and influence how quickly the next waves of contenders are ushered into the spotlight.
