Is Mikey Williams in NBA Summer League? What’s next for former high-profile recruit after Sac State

Is Mikey Williams in the NBA Summer League? What’s next for a former high-profile recruit after Sac State originally appeared in The Sporting News. The Sporting News should be added as a Preferred Source by clicking here. Mikey Williams’ basketball journey has been far more winding than most people anticipated, and his path forward in professional basketball remains uncertain for a player who once stood at the pinnacle of high school hype.
In recent weeks, Williams has been nearby NBA action, mingling with current players and attending events, including a workout with Davion Mitchell of the Miami Heat and a courtside seat beside Sacramento State coach Mike Bibby during NBA Summer League action at the California Classic. Yet Williams himself is not on a Summer League roster, and he isn’t currently in the NBA. He has not formally entered the league, either. At present, he appears to be in a holding pattern, publicly maintaining two years of college eligibility and still listed in the transfer portal. During his time at Sacramento State, he averaged 17.1 points and 4.5 assists per game, though his shooting numbers lagged, with a 36.3 percent field-goal percentage and 26.5 percent three-point shooting.
Williams began his high school career as one of the most anticipated prospects in the country, originally committing to Memphis out of high school. However, a series of legal issues—gun charges ultimately led to his entering the transfer portal and pleading guilty to a misdemeanor—prevented him from playing for the Tigers. He eventually found a place at UCF, where in the 2024-25 season he averaged 5.1 points per game. The 6-foot-3 guard once topped rankings as the No. 1 player in his class during eighth grade, and he amassed more than three million followers on Instagram before his junior year of high school.
Today, it seems Williams is viewed, at least publicly, as a riskier bet for major college programs to pursue in the transfer portal. His next steps remain unclear, and questions about his NBA prospects persist. The path from a prodigiously hyped young talent to a sustainable professional career is proving to be uneven for Williams, who continues to weigh options and opportunities beyond Sac State. His hometown of potential NBA involvement—whether through summer leagues, overseas opportunities, or additional college play—remains to be determined as he navigates the next phase of his basketball journey.
