Texas basketball lands No. 1 prospect Marcus Spears Jr. after reclassification

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

Marcus Spears Jr. is on his way to the Longhorns this season. The top-ranked prospect in the 2027 class officially announced his reclassification and commitment to the University of Texas on Thursday, July 9, which will make him eligible to play for Texas during the 2026-27 season. The 6-foot-9 power forward from Dynamic Prep in Texas chose the Longhorns over a crowded field that included Arizona, LSU, North Carolina, and Kentucky, among others. In a welcome home choice, Spears will stay in his home state and join his sister Cari in Austin, where she is a volleyball student-athlete at Texas.
During the spring Nike EYBL circuit, Spears put up impressive production, averaging 20.9 points and 8.9 rebounds. He distinguished himself as the lone player to finish among the top 10 in both scoring and rebounding, underscoring his well-rounded impact on the floor. The son of former NFL defensive end Marcus Spears and former WNBA player Aiysha Spears, he has already gained valuable international experience, helping USA Basketball secure a gold medal at the 2025 FIBA U16 Men’s AmeriCup by posting a team-best 14 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Spears’ commitment represents the sixth pledge in Texas’ 2026 recruiting class. He joins five-star McDonald’s All-American Austin Goosby, four-star small forward Bo Ogden, and four-star guard Joe Sterling as the latest pieces for the Longhorns. With Spears in the fold, Texas’s class composition continues to take shape, moving the program toward a higher national ranking. Observers and analysts have noted that Spears’ addition elevates the class’s overall profile, with early projections placing Texas among the more robust recruiting hauls in the country for 2026.
At 17 years old, Spears will not be draft-eligible for the NBA until 2028, making it highly probable that he will spend at least two seasons in Austin before pursuing professional opportunities. His continued development at Texas is anticipated to be a focal point for the program, given his athletic toolkit, versatility, and proven track record of contributing at high levels in major showcases and international play. The Longhorns’ 2026 recruiting class, bolstered by Spears’ arrival, is positioned to build momentum for the program’s future on the court and in national recruiting rankings.
