Kawhi Leonard Trade on Hold Until NBA Wraps Clippers Investigation

Kawhi Leonard’s return to the Toronto Raptors is currently on hold as the teams confirmed in public statements that their previously agreed trade will not be finalized until the NBA’s investigation into the Clippers’ ties to Aspiration is resolved. Since last September, the league has been probing the Clippers over allegations that Leonard had an unreported endorsement relationship with the defunct environmental startup, a scheme that could have allowed him to surpass the salary cap and boost compensation beyond his standard contract with the team. If the league unveils wrongdoing, the consequences could be severe for the Clippers, including the potential loss of multiple first-round picks, fines, and even the possible voiding of Leonard’s contract.
In a Raptors statement, the team explained that the NBA league office notified them that the ongoing investigation could influence Kawhi Leonard’s status, and therefore they would assume the risk of any potential outcomes as the investigation unfolds. The Raptors emphasized their continued eagerness to welcome Kawhi back to Toronto and expressed hope for a swift resolution that benefits players, the organization, and the fan base alike.
The trade, initially reported on June 30, drew considerable attention across the NBA, as observers questioned whether the transaction could move forward while the investigation remained active. Leonard is in the final year of a three-year, $150 million extension signed in 2024. He is set to earn about $50.3 million next season and is eligible for a two-year extension worth approximately $123.7 million. ESPN noted that Leonard and the Raptors were planning extension discussions this week, but those talks cannot formally commence until the trade is completed.
Commissioner Adam Silver has repeatedly stated that Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has fully cooperated with the inquiry. Ballmer, Leonard, Leonard’s uncle Dennis Robertson, and Aspiration co-founder Joseph Sanberg have all sat for interviews with league investigators. In February, Silver described the investigation as “enormously complex,” referencing Aspiration’s bankruptcy proceedings and the thousands of documents reviewed by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Kratz—the law firm hired by the league for this probe.
The Clippers affirmed on Thursday that the team has participated in “dozens of interviews” and provided “tens of thousands of documents” to the NBA as part of the investigation. The franchise also asserted confidence that the trade involving Leonard will proceed once the inquiry concludes. A Clippers’ statement read, “We did not funnel money to Kawhi Leonard through Aspiration. We remain confident that, when the facts are evaluated fairly and thoroughly, the NBA will confirm exactly what we have said from the beginning: We have not done what we are accused of doing.”
This developing situation means fans and markets alike will have to wait for the NBA’s ruling before the Leonard-to-Raptors deal can be finalized. The outcome of the investigation could not only shape Kawhi Leonard’s immediate playing future but also impact the strategic plans of both the Raptors and the Clippers as they navigate through this high-profile, high-stakes matter. The public-facing statements from both franchises indicate a shared expectation that the trade will move forward once the league completes its review, but until then, Leonard’s return to Toronto remains on hold.
