Six former Seminoles set for NBA Summer League action

Florida State’s basketball program will be well represented in Las Vegas as six former Seminoles earn chances to showcase their talents on one of the sport’s premier offseason stages. LaJae Jones, Robert McCray V, John Butler Jr., Darin Green Jr., Chauncey Wiggins and Jamir Watkins are all slated to participate in the NBA 2K26 Summer League, which runs July 10 and features all 30 NBA franchises. This event is about more than exhibition play; it offers each player an avenue to vie for roster spots, two-way contracts, and invitations to training camp ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season.
Jones enters Las Vegas with the strongest pro footing among the group after becoming the first NBA Draft pick of the Luke Loucks era. Golden State selected the versatile forward with the No. 54 overall pick in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft, rewarding a breakout Florida State season in which he emerged as one of the ACC’s premier two-way players. The Warriors open Summer League play against the Dallas Mavericks on July 9, giving Jones an immediate opportunity to test himself against another former Seminole. Golden State’s pool also includes games versus the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Memphis Grizzlies before the tournament’s placement rounds.
Green earns another NBA opportunity by extending his professional career beyond his Florida State days. Known as one of the Seminoles’ most prolific three-point shooters in recent memory, Green will attempt to use Las Vegas to display the perimeter scoring that has kept him on the NBA radar. His Summer League debut features a compelling Florida State storyline—the matchup against Jones and the Warriors—when Dallas, Green’s team, and the Lakers, Grizzlies, and other opponents battle in pool play.
McCray, who went undrafted in June, quickly secured an Exhibit 10 contract with the Los Angeles Lakers and earned a Summer League invitation after leading Florida State in both scoring and assists during the 2025-26 season. The explosive guard now has a chance to compete for a training camp invitation while continuing to build his professional résumé. The Lakers’ opener is against Oklahoma City, followed by games with Dallas and the Clippers. The July 11 meeting with the Mavericks could renew a Florida State clash as McCray eyes another chance to prove himself on a national stage.
Unlike his peers, Butler arrives in Las Vegas with several years of professional experience. After joining the NBA as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and spending time on a two-way contract with the Portland Trail Blazers, Butler spent the 2025-26 season with the Wisconsin Herd, Milwaukee’s NBA G League affiliate. His strong play in the G League earned him a spot on the Bucks’ Summer League roster, where he has already been part of the California Classic. Butler’s veteran presence in the Summer League adds a different dimension to the Seminoles’ representation, highlighting the program’s ability to develop talent capable of transitioning to sustained professional careers.
Rounding out the Florida State contingent, Chauncey Wiggins and Jamir Watkins are also expected to compete in Las Vegas. Their inclusion reflects the depth of Florida State’s talent pool and the program’s continued ability to place players in prominent offseason showcases. Summer League serves as a critical proving ground for these players, who will look to translate their college success into pro opportunities, whether through fresh contracts, two-way deals, or invites to training camps for the 2026-27 season.
For fans following Florida State basketball’s ongoing pipeline to the pros, the Las Vegas Summer League provides a unique lens into the Seminoles’ impact on the NBA landscape. Each former Seminole brings a distinct skill set—from Jones’s two-way versatility and Green’s sharpshooting to McCray’s scoring and playmaking and Butler’s veteran leadership—highlighting how Florida State continues to produce versatile, pro-ready talents. As the Summer League unfolds across the Las Vegas venue, these six Seminoles will not only represent their university but also vie for opportunities that could shape their professional trajectories for the 2026-27 NBA season and beyond.
