Steelers must capitalize on massive schedule advantage

On paper, the 2026 Pittsburgh Steelers could arguably boast the best roster the franchise has fielded since the turn of the decade. The addition of Michael Pittman and Germie Bernard to complement DK Metcalf at receiver, along with Rico Dowdle added at running back, signals a sweeping talent upgrade at the skill positions when compared with the previous two seasons. Beyond the offensive upgrades, Pittsburgh has also fortified its secondary with a collection of high-end players, re-signing Asante Samuel Jr. and bringing in Jamel Dean and Jaquan Brisker. It isn’t merely a talented roster guided by new head coach Mike McCarthy and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham that could propel the Steelers to build on their 10-7 record from 2025, a season in which they won their division; the schedule itself is shaping up to be favorable.
According to FTN Fantasy’s strength-of-schedule measurements using DVOA, Pittsburgh benefits from the easiest first-half slate in the NFL. The early portion of the year features Week 8 against the Cleveland Browns, followed by a bye in Week 9. Conversely, the second half of the season presents one of the league’s more challenging stretches, with the Steelers facing the Baltimore Ravens twice, traveling to take on the Philadelphia Eagles and the Jacksonville Jaguars, and hosting the Denver Broncos and the Houston Texans in standalone games. This kind of scheduling pressure is not new for Pittsburgh. In the previous season, the Steelers confronted a notably back-loaded timetable; from Week 10 onward they took on the Los Angeles Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills, the Ravens twice, and the Detroit Lions, in addition to an AFC North clash with the Browns and a home game versus the Miami Dolphins. The 2024 schedule mirrored this pattern, featuring the Washington Commanders, the Ravens, the Bengals twice, the Eagles, and the Chiefs from Week 10 forward.
Looking ahead to 2026, the Steelers’ strategic objective in the first eight games is to reach five wins. If they can enter the bye week at 5-3 or even 6-2, they will gain leverage to absorb a tougher late-season run, particularly during a demanding five-game stretch that includes stand-alone contests against the Bengals, Eagles, Broncos, Texans, and Jaguars. That cushioning could give Pittsburgh the room to navigate a brutal late-season slate more comfortably while keeping their playoff ambitions firmly in sight.
