UPDATE 2: The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced changes to their coaching staff. Assistant coach Steve Sullivan has been promoted to head coach of the Leafs’ AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. In addition, Mark Giordano has moved from a development coaching role to an assistant coach position on Sullivan’s staff. UPDATE: Hailey Wickenheiser, a longtime associate coach with the Leafs, confirmed on social media today that she was among the staff members impacted by today’s layoffs within the club’s coaching and management ranks. Wickenheiser released a statement describing eight years with the organization, noting that she had discussions with John Chayka about her role and continuing to have a significant impact, but that the leadership group envisioned a different path. Since joining the club in 2018, she highlighted pride in the player development team’s accomplishments and expressed gratitude for the colleagues, coaches, management, and players she has worked with. She wished the team well and looked forward to her next chapter. The club’s latest round of changes comes after a broader offseason in which Toronto has been reevaluating every layer of its organization—from the head coach’s chair down to front-office roles. Reports from July 9 indicated a comprehensive overhaul of the analytics department and additional restructuring within scouting and front-office staff, including the removal of assistant general manager Darryl Metcalf. Analysts have suggested the organization is pursuing a deeper, more foundational shift in how it evaluates players, makes decisions, and builds its roster, rather than minor adjustments. This front-office shakeup followed a prior dramatic overhaul of the coaching staff, with head coach Jim Hiller announcing departures of assistant coaches Mike Van Ryn and Derek Lalonde. The club has since added three new voices to the bench: Daniel Alfredsson as associate coach, John Gruden as assistant coach, and Brad Werenka as assistant coach. Alfredsson’s hire drew widespread attention; the Hockey Hall of Fame member and former Ottawa Senators captain brings a storied resume to the Leafs, though the specifics of his role and impact remain under close watch as the team continues its rebuild under a fresh leadership structure.
