Opinion: England have enough quality to stop Haaland and Norway

England face arguably their toughest test of the World Cup so far as they prepare to meet Norway in the quarter-finals. Much of the pre-match chatter has focused on Erling Haaland, but I’m convinced the Three Lions possess more than enough quality to book a place in the semi-finals. There are valid concerns about England’s quarter-final opponents, yet their own on-field personnel are more than capable of delivering the goods.
Many observers expect Haaland to rip through Thomas Tuchel’s England defence, given the Manchester City forward’s extraordinary form, including six goals from four appearances and a remarkable haul of 112 Premier League goals in 132 league appearances. He is, without doubt, a natural scorer. However, football at the international level is a team game, where collective effort often dominates the impact of a single standout performer, even if that player can tilt a match in moments.
England’s attack has been firing in unison, with Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane combining to great effect up front. Between them, they have nine goals in total, and their understanding in the final third has been a key driver of England’s recent success. Kane, widely regarded as one of the world’s premier strikers, enjoyed a sensational season with 58 goals for Bayern Munich last year, a figure that positions him as a genuine Ballon d’Or contender. In comparison, Haaland tallied 38 goals across all competitions in the previous campaign. While that is an outstanding return, it still trails Kane’s prolific production by a notable margin.
Norway’s path to this quarter-final may have seen them defeat Brazil, a five-time world champions, but it’s fair to remember that Brazil have not lifted the World Cup in 24 years—a long drought by any measure. England, by contrast, have enjoyed a period of relatively consistent success on the international stage, even if silverware has eluded them in the most recent campaigns. They reached back-to-back European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024 and made the World Cup semi-finals in 2018, underscoring their standing as a strong, credible force in international football. The FIFA World Rankings reflect that shape, with England placed fourth and Norway 19th, a gap that, while not decisive in football, suggests the odds lean in England’s favour for this clash. Rankings can mislead, but they provide a useful benchmark, and on current form England appear well-placed to advance.
England’s earlier success in overcoming Mexico at altitude and on home soil—achieved with key contributions from Kane and Bellingham—has reinforced belief that Tuchel’s side can replicate that performance against Norway. If the team can maintain the same level of cohesion, pressure the ball effectively, and exploit swift forward play through Kane’s movement and Bellingham’s versatility, they should be able to create chances and convert them.
In short, while Haaland represents a genuine threat, England’s depth and attacking balance give them a solid chance to progress. The collective strength of the squad, combined with Kane’s clinical finishing and Bellingham’s dynamism, provides a powerful blueprint for victory. If England maintain focus, discipline, and an intelligent game plan, they can thrive against Norway and move a step closer to lifting the World Cup trophy.
