Manchester United have been dealt a knockout blow in their pursuit of Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, it has emerged. The Red Devils are clearly prioritising midfield reinforcements this summer, with a number of players under serious consideration as they look to bolster the engine room. Michael Carrick’s side are close to sealing a deal for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, who successfully underwent his medical today. United have also finalised terms with Atalanta and are now poised to conduct Ederson’s medical examination as the next step in the transfer process. Yet the club is not expected to stop there, with at least one additional midfield signing anticipated.
A report covered by The Peoples Person indicated that Manzambi has admirers at Old Trafford. Over the past year, the 20-year-old has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s standout midfielders. A traditional box-to-box presence in every sense, Manzambi combines physical strength with technical quality. His dynamic surging runs from deep pose a continual threat, and his finishing ability adds another dimension to his game. In the previous season, he contributed five goals and four assists in 27 Bundesliga appearances. He has also been among the breakout stars of the World Cup, recording three goals and two assists for Switzerland, who are set to face Argentina in the quarter-finals this weekend.
Beyond United, Newcastle were also mentioned as an interested party in the young talent. Now, Florian Plettenberg reports that an agreement is in place between Newcastle and Freiburg for Manzambi. The Sky Germany journalist claimed, “EXCLUSIVE | Newcastle and SC Freiburg have reached a full agreement over the transfer of Johan Manzambi worth €60m.” He added that “all agreements between the clubs are in place. #NUFC are now finalising the final details of the deal with Manzambi. A long-term contract is being prepared.” He also noted that Aston Villa were in the race after Amadou Onana’s ACL injury, but Newcastle are the clear favourites. Manzambi, who is currently dealing with an injury, remains fully focused on the World Cup.
Manzambi’s potential move has often drawn comparisons to Jude Bellingham, a parallel that could feel like déjà vu for United, who once missed out on the England midfielder several years ago. The unfolding saga continues to captivate fans as the transfer window intensifies and clubs chase fresh talent to refresh their squads for the new campaign.
