Remember when Tom Brady once claimed he didn’t have a “dog in the fight” before the Patriots-Seahawks Super Bowl? It’s possible he did, at least in some sense. On Thursday’s edition of The Dan Patrick Show, Seattle coach Mike Macdonald was asked to name someone who offered him advice before Super Bowl LX that might “surprise” Dan. “John Harbaugh and I talked,” Macdonald said. “He was great. Probably can’t mention one guy who really helped us out that had some conflict of interest.” Dan guessed Bill Belichick, but Macdonald made it clear that it wasn’t the former Patriots coach.
What about the idea involving Brady himself? Brady, now an owner with the Raiders, was reportedly planning to hire Seattle offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak to be Las Vegas’s next head coach. It’s natural to wonder why Brady wouldn’t want to bring a Super Bowl winner to town. And, truthfully, players who have contributed to a franchise’s championship pedigree—whether it’s one title or many, even six—often don’t want their legacy undermined by a new championship team. While there’s no evident rancor between Brady and the team that erected a Brady statue outside its home stadium, there’s an odd undercurrent. Some have speculated that Brady would have preferred to purchase a stake in the Patriots rather than the Raiders, but that owner Robert Kraft supposedly wouldn’t offer the sweetheart deal that Raiders owner Mark Davis did.
The critical element here is the phrase “conflict of interest.” That term has repeatedly surfaced in discussions about Brady’s roles as a Fox broadcaster and as a Raiders owner. There would clearly be a potential conflict between his ties to the Patriots and his ties to Kubiak. In this context, the “conflict of interest” label underscores the delicate balance Brady would face if he maintained involvement with both organizations, especially as he contemplates opportunities that connect his past loyalties with present ambitions. The dialogue around these intersecting affiliations continues to fuel speculation about how Brady’s future moves could influence the dynamics of the Patriots, the Raiders, and the broader NFL landscape.
