Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser has announced that she will be leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs after eight seasons with the organization. Wickenheiser first joined the Maple Leafs in 2018 as assistant director of player development. She was promoted to senior director of player development in 2021, and in 2022 she took on the role of assistant general manager. After eight years with the team, she is now stepping away from the organization.
In a message posted to her social media on Thursday, Wickenheiser explained that she is departing the Maple Leafs after spending eight seasons in the franchise’s front office. “For the past eight seasons, it has been an incredible honor to work for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Over the last few days, John Chayka and I had several discussions about my role moving forward. During those conversations, my expectation was that I would be in a position to continue to have a significant impact within the organization. However, it became clear that his leadership group envisioned a different path,” she wrote on Instagram.
She continued, “Since joining the club in 2018, I have been immensely proud of the work our player development team has accomplished. I want to sincerely thank the incredibly talented individuals, coaches, management, and players whom I have been fortunate enough to work alongside over the last eight years. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity, wish the team nothing but the best moving forward, and look forward to the next chapter.”
Wickenheiser is widely regarded as one of the greatest female hockey players of all time, having won four Olympic gold medals for Team Canada and one silver. She spent 23 years with Team Canada’s women’s national hockey team, recording 168 goals and 211 assists in 276 games, and she served as captain in 2010 when Canada captured gold in Vancouver. After retiring from the sport, she pursued medicine and earned her medical degree in 2021.
Her departure leaves a notable gap within the Maple Leafs’ front office. The team’s changes were accelerated as new Maple Leafs GM John Chayka began reshaping the organization, making a series of personnel moves. On Thursday, the Maple Leafs announced the dismissal of several long-tenured front-office members. Wickenheiser was not fired; rather, she chose to move on after it became evident that she and Chayka did not share the same vision for her role going forward.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether the Maple Leafs will seek a new executive to fill Wickenheiser’s position or how the organization will restructure going forward. What is clear is that Chayka is systematically renewing the front office, signaling a broader shift away from the previous regime that had operated under Kyle Dubas and Brad Treliving. In the wake of these changes, many senior members from those administrations appear to be transitioning out of the organization.
As for Wickenheiser, her career outside the Maple Leafs remains remarkable. Beyond her work in hockey administration, she is a medical doctor, a profession she has pursued alongside her illustrious athletic career. Her expertise and leadership will undoubtedly be valuable wherever her next professional chapter leads. The Maple Leafs’ future direction under Chayka will unfold in the coming months as they continue to reorganize and redefine their approach to player development and front-office strategy.
