Brady Singer’s Start vs. Phillies Will Intrigue Contenders Before Trade Deadline

The Cincinnati Reds suffered a 1-0 setback to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night, a tough result that masked a strong on-field performance from starter Brady Singer. Despite taking the loss, Singer delivered an impressive showing that could boost his value as a potential trade candidate. The 29-year-old right-hander limited the Phillies to a single earned run across seven and one-third innings, and he was stingy with baserunners, yielding just four hits while punching out five hitters. The only blemish on his line was the absence of run support from his offense, leaving him with a hard-fought defeat on the scoreboard.
On the other side, Jesús Luzardo tossed seven scoreless innings, fanning 11, and ultimately earned the win in what shaped up as a classic pitchers’ duel. Luzardo’s performance underscored the stellar pitching that night, but Singer’s continued effectiveness did not go unnoticed. For Singer, though, the numbers this season have been a mixed bag. Even with his strong showing against Philadelphia, his overall line sits at a 4.72 ERA through 18 appearances, accompanied by 76 strikeouts in 89.2 innings. The question, of course, is whether a late burst of form could translate into serious trade interest ahead of the deadline.
In truth, Singer remains a compelling trade commodity for several reasons. With not many traditional sellers anticipated at the deadline, a veteran right-hander with significant big-league experience can attract considerable attention. Singer’s track record adds to his appeal: he has reliably taken the mound as a regular starter on a consistent schedule. He has recorded exactly 32 starts in each of the past two seasons and has appeared in no fewer than 27 games in each of the last four years. This durability is a valuable asset for any contending team seeking depth in the rotation.
Contenders across MLB are typically willing to add a seasoned pitcher who has demonstrated the capacity to handle a full load of innings and a high-pressure environment, especially one with Friday-to-Sunday reliability and a proven track record of making starts every fifth day. Singer’s recent standout performance against a strong Phillies lineup only increases his allure, as it demonstrates his ability to perform against quality competition and in high-stakes situations.
The Reds’ season has drifted toward disappointment, as they dropped to 42-50 and sit at the bottom of the National League Central standings. While the possibility of sneaking into the National League Wild Card race remains on the table for now, Cincinnati is more likely to position itself as a seller as the trade deadline approaches. Selling veteran pieces like Singer could provide a meaningful infusion of prospects and future potential for a franchise still rebuilding its roster, even if the team does not intend to embark on a full-blown rebuild.
Looking ahead, the Reds will try to turn the page quickly as they prepare for a three-game home series against the Chicago Cubs. This series represents Cincinnati’s final test before the All-Star break, and their objective will be to finish strong to head into the break on a high note. The opener of the set is slated for 7:10 PM EST in Cincinnati, and the Reds will hope to use the series to send a message to fans and the league alike about their competitive ambitions heading into the second half of the season. With or without a trade, this series offers an opportunity for a meaningful statement before the midseason pause.
