Dalano Banton never truly found his footing with the Boston Celtics. On Thursday, the Celtics officially waived the promising 6-foot-8 guard from Canada. They themselves announced the move on social media. With this decision, Boston now has 14 players under contract, leaving them some flexibility to pursue another addition if they choose. Banton will turn 27 in November and was the 46th overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft by the Toronto Raptors out of Nebraska. His journey has included time at two different high schools in Massachusetts as he developed into a professional prospect.
In the NBA, Banton has spent time with the Raptors, Celtics, Trail Blazers, and Clippers, with a return to the Celtics in recent seasons. He appeared in 24 games for Boston during his first stint in 2023-24, and this latest run saw him play in four games. Across four games in the 2025-26 season, Banton totaled 6 points and 10 assists. Throughout his career, his upside has always been appealing due to his length and playmaking potential, but his shooting, especially his 3-point percentage, has typically limited his impact in today’s game. Over his career, he has logged a 30.3% mark from beyond the arc, which constrains his fit in a modern offense.
Given his versatility and length for a guard, it’s likely Banton will land another contract somewhere, perhaps even returning to Boston at some point in the future. For now, however, the Celtics have officially moved on. In the broader landscape of Celtics news, fans are left to wonder how the latest roster changes will shape the team’s rotation as training camp approaches.
